GEOINT 2013* Operationalizing Intelligence for Global Missions
| |   |
Hello GISuser... and welcome to another Thursday, Spring edition of our Geotech news roundup. Did you notice Microsoft making some buzz yesterday on many of the social media channels? Yesterday the company rolled out details of their new mobile platform, Windows Phone 8.1 along with a number of new Nokia devices. WP 8.1 comes with loads of new functionality and the latest Lumia devices will run with some nice, enhanced Sype calling capabilities as well as some nifty built-in data and wifi warning functionality - imagine your device using wifi rather than your mobile data in order to save you some $$. The biggest hype was likely surrounding Cortana (ya I know, a rather odd name!) which is their version of Siri essentially - think personal digital assistant and more - all the details and a video from the event can be accessed HERE. For mobile users and baseball fans like myself something fun from Mapquest via an interesting product launch from MLB and Mapquest to celebrate the MLB opening season. Users can customize their mobile navigation experience (iOS and Android) with their team colors , icons, wallpapers, and accent colors by purchasing their team kit upgrade (note, a small cost of $1.99 is required) - Details HERE. Finally, have you checked out the Google Map Gallery yet? I have to say it's pretty darned sweet. Something the geogeek may appreciate is the easy access to downloadble USGS topos - served as GeoPDFs. A fabulous resource indeed and you can even embed the topo map gallery on your own website just like we did HERE. Have a super day all!

How We Use Mobiles & Facebook: Men and Women use social media differently - Do you know that men and women use smartphones in a completely different way? Men prefer quick access to deals, women prefer brands, paid ads likely don't work as well on women and they also tend to ignore mobile ads. Social media and mobile use give us a treasure hoard of insights about our general habits as a community. So it's only inevitable that we find numerous surveys about the two platforms based on one of the most popular categories: gender difference
No Foolin' - You Can Contribute to National Mapping - This April marks the one year anniversary of the USGS's The National Map Corps (TNMCorps) transition from a small regional pilot project in the heart of Denver, Colo., into a very successful nation-wide project. During the past year, civilian volunteers in every state have increasingly provided accurate mapping data to the National Geospatial Program's publically available application called The National Map.
