Hello GISuser...
Do you enjoy looking at imagery from space? If so then the new widget from the USGS may appeal to you. Its now a snap to add the Earth as art widget to your website, blog, or iGoogle custom homepage... more on this over at the blog. Speaking of blogs, I've highlighted a cool blog called "The Dirt" today in my list of favorite things. This resource from ADSK evangelist Pete Kelsey will help keep you informed about the latest developments with Civil 3D and other related products. Speaking of Autodesk, we also have details of the unconference and unplugged sessions scheduled to take place at AU this year.. see below for more on this. In the headlines today we have LOADS of cool announcements including details of a utility that will enable users of ArcGIS to quickly create cross-sections. Are you down-under and looking for a reseller of Virtual Earth? No worries as we have details of a new partner that can help you. In Europe this week Trimble make a big splash with some major announcements - the company used INTERGEO 2007 to introduce new and enhanced surveying products as part of their Connected Site model. Finally, cool news from north of the 49th as DM solutions group have announced this week that they will resell DigitalGlobe data and web services through a partnership agreement. The news was announced this week at the FOSS4G event taking place in my old stomping grounds of Victoria, BC. There's loads of other tidbits just announced so read-on and enjoy. Have a great day. PS: The next edition may be delayed a day as I'll be in Chicago for a day or 2 taking in the sold out Adobe Max developer event.

GISuser Reading... Succeeding with Open Source - IT organizations are turning to open source as a result of two hot buttons: cost efficiency and the need for innovative business solutions. IT organizations need to direct their investment toward business-specific innovation and away from pure infrastructure products. Open source is therefore an increasingly popular choice for infrastructure software. However, open source software differs significantly from its commercial counterpart. Because of that, a different evaluation and selection strategy is necessary - but until now, there has been no guide to help organizations develop an open source strategy. Succeeding with Open Source is that guide. (Price: $29.10) - UK Orders Here
