Hello GISuser...
Hopefully a few of our Canadian readers managed to make it in to work today after celebrating Canada's Birthday yesterday... no doubt a few US readers have also cut away a little early this week as we prepare to celebrate the 4th! Some interesting updates today as location is really getting a kick in the butt and headed mainstream... case in point, Firefox at release 3.5 is adding location-browsing to the feature-set. The idea is that users will be asked where you are in an effort to deliver more relevant, local content to your search results. When using mapping functionality, the idea is that the browser will know where you are so all you need to do is enter where you want to go in order to get directions etc. In a related matter, it seems PC giant, Dell, is adding location inside as we hear that the new Dell Notebooks (Mini) will have pre-installed location based services. The Dell Wireless 700 location solution includes the hybrid GPS and Wi-Fi Positioning location engine from Skyhook Wireless, the same engine deployed on tens of millions of Apple iPhones and iPod Touch devices. Interesting stuff as we see location starting to be bundled with everything!
In the news today, a reminder from our friends at LizardTech that the voting has started on their "show us" [your Lizard] competition. Voting will be available during the first day of the ESRI conference in LizardTech's booth (#511). The person whose lizard photo receives the most votes will win a brand new handheld GPS system. Also of interest, the first 25 conference attendees to bring one DVD of LiDAR data (LAS or ASCII format) to the LizardTech booth (#511) by 6pm on Tuesday, July 14 (See more). Some great news for mobile enthusiasts and those of you on the road this summer as NAVTEQ has announced a new version of its free NAVTEQ Traffic.com(R) mobile website at http://mobi.traffic.com/ - easily accessed from any cell phone or PDA with a mobile web browser where users have access to real-time traffic data! Finally, a bright point to share as GeoEye has announced the win of new government awards totaling more than $25 million to supply geospatial products and services to the NGA... congrats!
I'll leave it there and wish all of you a happy and safe 4th of July holiday week-end - play safe and don't drink and drive please! A holiday tip to share.. DID-U-Know that you can now Twitter via Flickr?? Enter Flickr2Twitter [beta] - Using the service, Flickr users can now easily "blog" their existing photo to Twitter with one click or they can send their photos directly to flickr and Twitter in one move from their mobile or via email.
