Geo Career - GIS Technical Systems Analyst, Washington State

Hello Geo tech Professional... Welcome once again to our Thursday edition of our Geo technology news roundup. Kicking things off, its seems the FBI is turning to Mapping Apps to Help Track Social Media Activity. In an interesting, yet not so surprising, read from NPR a story about how the FBI wants to track and visualize social media activity using geospatial technology and mapping apps - sounds a lot like what Esri has been doing with their Social news maps and GeoCommons (GeoIQ) with social media map mashups. Apparently, NPR shares that the Bureau wants to access "publicly available information" like Twitter and facebook updates (are these data really public?) and then create geospatial alerts based on suspicious activity. Something for photo you photo bufss... Nikon has rolled out a new S series of cameras and best of all, the Coolpix S9300 Includes GPS - I recall testing a Kodak that sported integrated GPS back in 2000 if you can believe that, however, Kodak never did roll out that device to the masses.. too bad, perhaps if they had the company might not be going under! I've been a photo buff for years, however, I've often wondered why all cameras don't come equipped with built in GPS. There's no doubt that the technology exists and with social sharing so prevalent, particularly social location. And some interesting news to take not of as Intergraph and ERDAS are delivering a webinar on how to Dynamically Manage, Analyze and Deliver Terabytes of Point Cloud and Image Data. During this webinar (Feb 8), you will see how LIDAR data and imagery management combines with analysis tools in an enterprise, dramatically increasing productivity

From the AnyGeo Blog... Here's a few of the latest tidbits and tech tips I've shared with the community at (blog.gisuser.com); A closeup look at the new, affordable GPS enabled S series GPS camera from Nikon; CNN Gets Their Cartography Wrong! Sorry London but it seems CNN cartographers may need a little bit of help from you; The Pacific Garbage Patch and Mapping the Ocean Currents Moving The Plastics - this Global issue is getting larger by the day and we can all help and do our part; A Giant Map from NGS to Hit Mississippi Museum of Natural Science - the map measures 26 feet by 35 feet and is designed as a giant game board. Finally, be sure to have a look around the GISuser career Center at a number of new Career opportunities listed this week... employers, be sure to take advantage of this resource for your next hire! HaAve a great day to everyone!
