Hello GISuser...
welcome again to our Thursday Geo-tech news round-up. To start, a couple of tips for consultants as the USGS and the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) have announced their request for proposals to support the 2009 National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Cooperative Agreements Program (CAP) - look for over $1.3 million spread across seven funding categories, recall in 2008, NSDI CAP awarded a total of 24 projects, totaling just over $1.1 million. Keep in mind that 2009 NSDI CAP proposals need to be submitted via Grants.gov by January 6, 2009. Speaking of important dates, May 19-21, 2009 is another important one! This is the date for the 2009 WHERE 2.0 conference taking place in San Jose, CA. If you've never been to a WHERE 2.0 I highly suggest it as you'll experience 2 days of where geo technologies are going from industry leaders, geo mashup developers, industry visionaries, and neo geographers - it's hands-down, one of my favorite geo events of the year, typically in a cozy setting of fewer than 1,000 people in an environment that is highly conducive to some very stimulating discussion.
On to today's geo news round-up... kudos to ESRI as users of ESRI's RouteMAP IMS software can now access local weather from WeatherBug. Recall the service has a network of 8,000 tracking stations providing up-to-date local weather throughout the US. Canon has introduced the imagePROGRAF iPF6000S, a 24-inch wide large format printer capable of printing up to 24-inches wide, both on roll and cut sheet.
Users of imagery will appreciate this new Automated Feature Extraction Solution from ERDAS, IMAGINE Objective. IMAGINE Objective includes a set of tools for feature extraction, update and change detection, enabling geospatial data layers to be created and maintained using remotely sensed imagery. Finally, from just down the road here in NOCO, Cary and Associates is hosting a Lidar Survey and is asking the community to take part and spend 10 minutes completing the survey. An executive summary of the research will be sent to all respondents who provide their email address.
Oh.. and speaking of Colorado, please check out today's spotlight from the USGS showing off a great new geological map of the Front Range. This map is available in a high-res downloadable file and would look great on any office wall or even hanging in the garage! Have a great day all.
[Feel free to send your comments, announcements, tips,
tricks, gripes, or kudos to Glenn]

GISuser Spotlight on the Front Range Geology... -
Today's Featured Map is a Geologic Map of the Denver West 30' x 60' Quadrangle, North-Central Colorado. Ever since my days consulting in British Columbia and working on countless geological and earthquake hazard mapping projects for the Geological Survey, I've had an affinity for geologic maps. This latest map from the USGS is a fine example and would be a perfect addition to hang on the wall in any Colorado-based business - or even in the garage!
