NAVTEQ Leads Panel of Experts to Explore Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Enabling Technology  E-mail

ITS World Congress Session Discusses Warning and Safety Innovations

CHICAGO, Oct. 9 -- NAVTEQ (NYSE: NVT), a leading global provider of digital map data for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions will facilitate a panel discussion that includes BMW Group Research and Technology, Ibeo Automotive Sensor, and Ygomi. The panel's focus is digital map enhancements and improvements to ADAS applications such as adaptive cruise control, lane and road departure warning, adaptive front light control, collision avoidance and smart transmission control. These applications that enhance the driver's ability to react to the road environment and other vehicles are enabled by digital maps and on-board sensors including radar, light detection and ranging (LIDAR), and on-board video cameras.

Sensor development has enabled initial ADAS development, but the increased precision of digital maps to include road geometry with relative accuracies of 1 meter, and attributes such as speed limits, special speed situations, lane counts and markings, exit lanes, curve radius, road height and slope, add new capabilities. Curve speed warning, slope powertrain adaptation, and speed limit advisory functionality are enhanced with this information, resulting in a more realistic driving experience that could improve safety, and increase driver confidence.

"Industry experts are predicting that ADAS will have an enormous impact on automotive safety and driver comfort in the next three to five years," stated Bob Denaro, Vice President of ADAS Development for NAVTEQ. "High quality digital maps such as those produced by NAVTEQ will make these systems even more effective and bridge the gap between a sterile automated system and what a good driver can see for himself about the road and environment surrounding his vehicle, the key to driver acceptance of and ultimately demand for ADAS."
