Launch of GIWIS (gee-whiz)--or the Geospatial Industry Workforce Information System
WHEN: Wednesday, September 13, 2006
11:45 a.m. -12 p.m.
WHAT: Launch of GIWIS (gee-whiz)--or the Geospatial Industry Workforce Information System--the nation's first and only online geospatial workforce information network and the selection of Denver as a U.S. Dept. of Labor supported model site for geospatial industry growth.
WHO: Geospatial industry leaders, executives of the Geospatial Information & Technology Association, Mayor John Hickenlooper, representatives from Senator Wayne Allard's office, and members of state and local workforce investment boards.
WHERE: GIS in the Rockies conference Invesco Field 1701 Bryant St. Denver, CO 80204
WHY: The event is the culmination of a major U.S. Department of Labor grant received by the Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA) and the Association of American Geographers (AAG). The grant supports President Bush's High Growth Job Training Initiative by forming high-level partnerships among industry, education, government and the public workforce investment system to collaboratively develop solutions to the workforce challenges and labor shortages facing the geospatial industry.
Denver will play a lead role in preparing workers to take advantage of new and increasing job opportunities in a field that the U.S. Department of Labor considers one of the three most important emerging and evolving fields-the geospatial industry. Geospatial skills will be an increasingly vital part of jobs in the region's fastest growing industries, including aerospace, energy, information technology and homeland security.
