Wednesday, 17 May 2006 The WV GIS TC has an ambitious goal to provide focus, direction and leadership to users of geographic information systems (GIS), digital mapping and remote sensing within the State of West Virginia. Data hounds will be pleased to find loads of freely available data products available here, in addition to many other useful GIS resources.
In addition to data many other State geospatial community resources are provided including news and announcements, job updates, project information, events, and much more.
At the heart of this portal for many users is the data access mechanism. Simply click the "GIS Data" link which will present a pull-down list with tons of thematic layers to select from. As an example I selected DRG for all locations. Several "hits" are returned including further information and links leading to 1:24k, 1:100k, and 1;250k DRG products. I then select the 1:24k DRG data products which takes me to a lengthy page with some lengthy metadata including information about the map projection, scale, coordinate system, and file format. Finally, at the end of the page I am presented with pointers to FTP servers where I can easily access the data. FTP server options are provided for collared and collarless data products as well as NAD 27 and NAD data.. nice!
Looking for elevation data or DEMs for West Virginia? You can easily access 3m DEMs, LIDAR data products, and SRTM data.
