Tampa, Fla., April 28, 2006—The Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA) announced today the city of Portland, Ore., was named the recipient of the 2006 GITA Excellence Award for the public sector.
The award recognizes the dedication, insight, and high degree of initiative in the outstanding application of geospatial technology. The award was presented during the Opening Session of GITA’s Annual Conference 29, held April 23-26, 2006, at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, Fla.
The Bureau of Environmental Services converted the City of Portland's CAD mapping system into a GIS integrated with the asset database. Business rules and edits govern the maintenance of information in both the database and GIS, eliminating errors and improving the quality of the data.
The new system produces GIS applications and maps with any subset of asset data. The sewer/storm assets are also shared with city staff through a centralized city GIS "hub" and with the public through www.portlandmaps.com.
“In environmental services we are always looking for improvements in our business processes, data, and application,” said Debbie Douglas, Mapping, Data, and Application Services Manager.” Winning this award is a great opportunity to take a minute to congratulate ourselves on what we have accomplished.”
