RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO, CANADA and KINGSTON, ONTARIO, CANADA - April 5th, 2006 - The City of Kingston, Canada is located halfway between Montreal and Toronto, Canada's two largest cities. With a population of 113,000, Kingston is considered one of Canada's top 25 cities, and the hub of eastern Ontario. With its growing population base and booming tourism industry, the City of Kingston was looking for an enterprise web-GIS system that would help them to increase local economic development, improve local government efficiency and increase access to land information for both internal and public users.
Kingston received GeoSmart funding to help support their GIS initiative. GeoSmart is a Provincial initiative led by the Ministry of Natural Resources in the Province of Ontario, which provides funding up to 50 per cent of a project's total eligible costs, generally not exceeding $500,000 per project. With funding secured, the City chose Orion Technology's OnPointT web-GIS product for its ability to easily link to databases throughout the entire organization to form a true enterprise GIS. This enterprise system would ensure that Kingston's GIS technology would be established as an integral part of their business and facilitate movement away from isolated planning and implementation of GIS initiatives in different departments.
"The City of Kingston's GIS team set some aggressive targets based on their strategic plan, with a focus on user friendly, easy to use web-GIS tools. OnPointT's rapid deployment and ease of administration, coupled with Kingston's strong vision and team, resulted in an effective implementation process." commented Faizal Hasham, Director of Sales and Marketing for Orion Technology.
The City has launched a unique and intuitive public web-GIS with a wealth of information for residents and tourists. Users can search for an address or intersection; find specific facilities or search for facilities near a particular address. Using drop down menus Users can quickly and easily navigate to information on tourism, electoral districts, neighborhoods, and city services like recycling, garbage and snow removal among others. The City has also implemented Orion's OnSiteT Software, an Economic Development Tool that allows visitors to search available properties in the City and to obtain site reports detailing zoning, utilities and other information. It can also display demographic information for a particular site or for a user specified radius around the site, and generate Existing Business Reports presenting a categorized list of existing businesses within a user specified radius.
Internally The City is using OnPointT to access data stored in the centralized geodatabase and has the ability to export and print maps for reports and presentations, query attribute data, buffering and notification. Web-based administration tools make it easier to maintain and update the system. Additional functionality includes on-the-fly cartographic quality maps, web-editing of spatial data, document viewing, public notification, redlining, custom workspaces and selection list management. OnPointT also enables linking to external databases such as the tax system, permit and licensing system and asset management system.
"OnPointT is a key component of the City of Kingston's overall enterprise GIS implementation strategy. OnPointT has tremendous potential in providing access to the City's corporate databases for all employees and has brought a whole new level of geographic services to the public." stated Shawn Croisier, GIS Supervisor for the City of Kingston.
