In the summer and autumn of 2005, fuel prices worldwide climbed to rare heights due to turbulence in the oil market and speculation in the wake of hurricane Katrina.
As yet, no decrease in fuel prices in Europe can be foreseen for the near future - prices will remain high, as will the price differences from one European country to another.
Currently, at 1.65 euros per litre* (super, 95 octane), petrol is most expensive in Iceland, closely followed by Turkey at 1.62 euros/litre. In Belarus, fuel is the least expensive in Europe - in the former Soviet republic, the average price per litre is only 0.59 euros.
GfK MACON has created a map showing the current average fuel prices in Europe for super and diesel fuel.
* (One litre is approximately 0.26 gallons in the US and 0.22 gallons in Britain)
