CommonCensus Project Maps NFL fans and organizes results by geography  E-mail

commoncensusThe CommonCensus Map Project is a unique way to create the first map of the US that shows where people actually believe themselves to live. According to the developer, the CommonCensus Map Project is showing how the country is really organized. The CommonCensus Sports Map Project is an offshoot project that tracks sports fans across the US. This innovative project enables sports fans to view sports fan areas and view maps from a variety of sports (NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, and NCAA). Clicking the map on an area of interest generates a fan radius circle and tabular results of fan loyaty are returned on the map and in a table.

About the Common Census Project

The CommonCensus Map Project is a new, unique initiative to create the first map of the US that shows where people actually believe themselves to live. Up until now, maps have always been drawn with state, county and city borders determined by select politicians. What if you could see the borders that the people living within them would draw? Such a map is possible.

By combining the votes from people all over the country, the CommonCensus Map Project is showing how the country is really organized.

Common Census maps sports fans by geography

Static maps for a number of sports are color coded to show fan areas.
Of interest to me this week-end was the Clickable NFL fan map. Click on a map to draw a 200 mile fan area circle.
Then a table is presented showing the breakdown of fans (from a sample) that turn up in that region. Of interest - the map above for Seattle shows SeaHawks were the #1 team (292 fans), followed by Denver Broncos, then Green Bay Packers. Interesting that Carolina Panthers were dead last with 1 fan in the sample! Notye, common census sports fan project shows stats collected from some 16587+ fan votes and includes maps for NFL, NHL, MLB. See www.commoncensus.org/sports.php - static maps are updated every few days and online, clickable fan maps are always available.

Common Census sports map - NFL shows team loyalty based on geography. Tabular breakdown of results follows. Numbers are based on the results found within a 200 mile raadius or area clicked on map.

Users who want to cast a vote for their favorite teams can do so at http://www.commoncensus.org/index.php

The CommonCensus Sports Map Project is an offshoot project that tracks sports fans across the US. It uses a similar method to the main project, but only asks people to state the teams they support in the NFL, in MLB, in the NBA, in the NHL, and in NCAAF I-A. A national map is produced for each organization, and colored using the same algorithm as the main project.

The projects are the creation of Michael Baldwin.
