A hot consumer LBS application hyped at last year's ESRI Telecom and LBS Summit was Trimble Outdoors. Simply put, Trimble Outdoors is a family of software applications for PCs and Nextel cell phones allowing you to share your maps, trips and photos and comments from trips with family and friends. Ideally suited for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts (hence the name) Trimble Outdoors is taking advantage of the popular recreational GPS market and providing a user friendly collaboration/blogging service to extend the experience.
Trimble’s Rich Rudow introduced me to this cool consumer app from the company called Trimble Outdoors. Think of this solution as an off-road navigation and location-based photo marking, blogging, and trip sharing solution. Offered as a subscription service, the solution lets users leverage ArcWeb Services to plan and route trips, and send routes to your GPS enabled cell-phone. This solution has been designed to let users of Nextel GPS enabled phones to harness the power of GPS. A fine example of what users can accomplish can be seen at Backpacker Magazine (online). Some 100 guides/hikers use the service to plan and map their routes, log waypoints, share photos and comments from their journeys. As a user of this service you have access to nationwide street data, topos, and aerials. Trimble Outdoors is ideally suited for hikers, boaters, geocaching, skiers, cyclists, and other outdoor enthusiasts.
ArcWeb Services supply mapping functionality and data to Trimble Outdoors mapping and trip planning software. "ESRI ArcWeb Services make it easy to integrate various map styles and data sources into our application allowing users to visualize their outdoor adventures and share where they've visited with friends and family," said Rich Rudow, managing director, Trimble Outdoors.
By combining GPS technology with the ability to view maps and location-stamped photos on a mobile phone and on the Web, outdoor adventurers have everything they need to capture their experiences and share them with others -- all within one lightweight and inexpensive mobile device. While on an adventure, users can take photographs, location- and time-stamp them, and share their adventures with others online at www.trimbleoutdoors.com.
To post to the online community and download specific trips, a subscription is necessary. The fee to this online community is included in the Trimble Adventure Planner software license fee or the Trimble Outdoors Gold and Platinum monthly fee.
If you're into geocaching, hunting, back packing, jogging, cycling, boating, flying, or skiing then this solutions is for you.
Save your trips and download to your PC as gpx file or Google Earth compatible KML
