This week, (at exactly 9:01 a.m. PST. Dec. 8, 2005) Microsoft introduced the World to their latest web service, Windows Local Live (Beta) powered by Virtual Earth. Windows Live Local combines MSN Search with the latest in mapping to create a new Web application built on Microsoft technology. The service requests users to provide details about "What" or "Where" and returns answers in a geographical context, enticing users to explore places using "immersive" aerial imagery. Save and Share all your places using the Scratch Pad and identify your favorite places with custom push pins.

The bird's eye imagery, provided by Pictometry, are perhaps the collest addition to the service. Imagery defaults to a North view. Users can ROTATE your view optically to really check out an area... views that aren't available are greyed out in the display.
The imagery provides 45-degree bird's-eye views of major U.S. cities such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle and Las Vegas, covering about 25 percent of the U.S. by population. The bird's- eye images are captured by Pictometry International Corp. via low-flying airplanes and then integrated with road and satellite maps to simulate 360- degree panoramas that can be viewed from four compass directions.
Links to places can be saved, albeit as a very long string. For example, check out these views of
