In response to Recent Hurricanes (Katrina, Rita, and Wilma) the U.S. Geological Survey continues to mobilize equipment and personnel to gather the scientific data and information on the impact of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. In doing so, they have also collected, analyzed and archived a vast amount of geospatial data and information. Now you have easy access to the data and archived information courtesy of the USGS.
A number of applications and uses of the data exist. USGS scientists will be:
Collecting satellite imagery to assess the impact on wetlands, coasts, and changes in the elevation
Collecting water samples to determine the water quality in areas where there has been significant salt water intrusion
Marking and flagging high-water marks to document flooding and storm surge
Repairing and replacing damaged streamgages to restore flood warning capabilities
Collecting aerial photography and video to document the impact on the coast and wetlands
Using airborne laser mapping systems (LIDAR) to quantify coastal changes
Visitors to the site will find tools and resources including information about coastal impacts & erosion, streamflow data, hurricane information, links to publications, and satellite imagery. Some of the image archives to be found are listed below.
Katrina Remote Sensing Clearinghouse In cooperation with FEMA, EROS is the clearinghouse for all aerial, satellite, and ground information on areas struck by natural disasters. http://eros.usgs.gov/rita/
Rita Remote Sensing Clearinghouse USGS EROS is supporting first responders and emergency services working in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Within hours of Katrina’s disastrous landfall on the Gulf Coast, EROS began channeling vital imagery to state and local governments, FEMA and other federal agencies—providing views of the devastated area, which helped prioritize the relief efforts http://eros.usgs.gov/katrina/
Wilma Remote Sensing Clearinghouse USGS EROS is preparing to support first responders and emergency services working in response to Hurricane Wilma. EROS will begin channeling vital imagery to state and local governments, FEMA, and other federal agencies. These images will help prioritize relief efforts. http://eros.usgs.gov/wilma/
