MYCOEThe My Community, Our Earth Project: Geographic Learning for Sustainable Development (MyCOE) project is a partnership to encourage youth to use geographic tools and concepts to address local issues of sustainability. You may have heard about the project at an ESRI User Coneference and the projects are also promoted via GISday.com

The vision of the organizers of My Community, Our Earth is to build a geographically literate generation able to use this knowledge in their everyday lives to bring about true sustainable development.

Getting students to think about geography.... the initiative has a number of clever ways to get people involved and to get students to start thinking spatially. To celebrate the start of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, My Community, Our Earth (MyCOE) recently held a student contest. Youth from middle school, secondary school, and university levels from around the world submitted maps and descriptions of the local projects on sustainable development issues which they conducted using MyCOE resources. See http://www.aag.org/sustainable/2005gallery/index.cfm

The My Community, Our Earth Project is promoted by the GIS Day committee and additional information can be found at gisday.com
