Aero Geomatics is a British Columbia-based consulting firm. Like many of us, the firm thinks in 3D. The company specializes in geomatic consulting services which include Custom aerial photo, flight plan layout, 3d physical models carved from dense foam, Surveying, photo control, Orthorectification and mosaicing, and much more. Most recently, the firm has been the focus of a interesting article in the Vancouver Sun.
In the article, Tim Daly, President of the Aero Geomatics describes how computer 3-D imaging could predict how disasters would look and as a result, potentially save many lives.
Daly has provided journalists with a real-time demonstration of 3D mapping technology, powered by another Vancouver-based company's solution - NGRAIN. The technology simulates the results of catastrophic events, such as a levee breaking, and displays topography and water flow scenarios in 3 dimensions and from all angles. Obvious to many of us who think in 3 dimensions, such a display, while incorporating 3d elevation data and topographic data would enable models to simulate the recent New Orleans disaster and get a visual picture of where the most seriously impacted areas would be and enable first responders to react based on the model.
Congrats to Aero Geomatics for helping clarify 3D geospatial solutions to the mainstream.
