Redlands, California-ESRI, the leader in geographic information system (GIS) technology, announces Image Server, a new product that resolves bottlenecks in conventional image-processing workflows.
This technology was originally developed by MAPS geosystems, a leading producer of innovative geospatial imaging solutions and a long-time ESRI business partner.
ESRI’s Image Server provides fast access and visualization of large quantities of file-based imagery, processed on the fly and on demand. Image Server combines image processing and distribution and enables the creation of new Web-based solutions that will increase the usage and value of geospatial imagery in a GIS context. Output imagery is displayed instantaneously for a number of concurrent users without the requirement to first preprocess the data and load it into a DBMS.
ESRI will initially launch Image Server as a stand-alone product that supports most GIS vendors’ software, including ArcGIS, ERDAS IMAGINE, Intergraph GeoMedia, and MapInfo Pro, as well as CAD software such as AutoCAD and MicroStation. In addition, this server supports open standards such as WMS and HTML viewers.
“Our new Image Server is expected to be immediately popular within large mapping and imagery data management companies. There is also an opportunity for significant use within agencies and companies that manage, distribute and use large quantities of image data,” says Jack Dangermond, president of ESRI.
Key functionality of ESRI’s Image Server includes
· Fast access to large image datasets · On-the-fly server-based image processing · Production of multiple imagery products from a single source · Multiplatform GIS/CAD/Web client access · Direct access to multiple file formats and compression · Fully scalable enterprise client/server architecture · Data security and access logging · Independence from third-party software or DBMS · Expandability through extensions and SDK
