Washington State Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development to be recognized with geographic information system Special Achievement Award
The Washington State Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development (CTED) will receive a 2005 Special Achievement in geographic information system (GIS) award for its exemplary use of the technology to promote economic development.
Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), the world leader in geographic information system (GIS) software based in California, will present the award July 27, 2005, at the 25th Annual ESRI International User Conference in San Diego, before thousands of GIS professionals.
Winners of this award were selected from more than 150,000 organizations worldwide.
CTED's economic development website www.choosewashington.com assists business owners and site selectors interested in expanding to or relocating in Washington State to connect with available properties, industry resources, and information about the state's workforce assets and lifestyle.
"The organizations winning this award have used GIS to produce profound work that benefits their businesses as well as the world around them," said Jack Dangermond, ESRI president. "They deserve to be recognized for the dedication and diligence apparent through their work with GIS."
The SAG award clearly recognizes CTED's vision in using GIS ArcIMS web technology for leading the economic efforts in the state of Washington in support of the Governor's commitment to create new jobs and enhance the vibrant economy of the state," said Milton Ospina, ESRI Economic Development Industry Manager.
"CTED's use of ArcIMS reduces the burden on businesses through the use of Web-based GIS and business data to facilitate the search for available sites for relocation and expansion."
The use of technology to support businesses is part of CTED's daily operations. Juli Wilkerson, CTED director, understands the potential of GIS for economic development from her years of work at the City of Tacoma. There, Wilkerson oversaw the development of an application called TacomaSpace.com.
Washington State Department of Community, Trade, and Economic Development (CTED) works in partnership with businesses, communities, local economic development organizations, and tribes to attract, retain, expand, and support economic programs that promote prosperity and improve the quality of life throughout the state of Washington.
