Open Source Software Adoption Not Cost-Dependent, New Evans Data Research E-mail
Written by Evans Data Research
13 July 2005
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - July 13, 2005 -- Evans Data Corporation has just published Open Source Vision, the first of four qualitative reports in their new forward looking Vision Series and finds that cost is not the main factor in deciding to adopt open source software for development.

The new series of reports provides a dependable roadmap into the future of information technology in four key technology areas: Open Source, Wireless, Enterprise and Web Services.

"One of the more remarkable findings in this new study is that cost, while still an important factor in the decision process to use open source software, isn't the deciding factor in the process," said John Andrews, Evans Data's Chief Operating Officer. "What are the issues that determine a company's willingness to utilize open source development? The new Vision reports provide answers to the issues that really matter."

The Vision Series will answer important development questions including: What is the current adoption rate for OSS now and into the future? Where are small, medium and large enterprises deploying OSS and at what priority level? What is the profile of today's and tomorrow's open source developer? What are the pricing dynamics of open source software development?

The Vision Series consists of results from interviews with top level development managers on issues of importance:

-- Open Source Vision -- Primary research to establish where OSS and Linux will be in the next few years.

-- Wireless Vision -- In-depth qualitative primary research with developers active in the development for wireless devices such as PDAs and cell phones.

-- Enterprise Vision -- In-depth qualitative primary research with in-house corporate development managers exploring the direction enterprise development is heading in.

-- Web Services Vision -- Primary qualitative research with developers actively involved with developing SOA and WS apps and infrastructure. Find out which technologies will be adopted from the people who will adopt them.
