Processed SRTM 90m Digital Elevation Data (DEM) for the Entire Globe E-mail
Written by Glenn Letham (GISuser editor)
06 July 2005
A great data tip came through to us recently from the ESRI Libraries newsletter... The CGIAR-CSI GeoPortal is now serving up processed SRTM 90M Global DEM data. Digital elevation models (DEM) for nearly the entire globe, covering most of the countries of the world, are available for download on this site.

The SRTM 90m DEM's have a resolution of 90m at the equator, and are provided in mosaiced 5 deg x 5 deg tiles for easy download and use. All are produced from a seamless dataset to allow easy mosaicing. These are available in both ArcInfo ASCII and GeoTiff format to facilitate their ease of use in a variety of image processing and GIS applications. Data can be downloaded using a browser or accessed directly from the ftp site. The data processing is currently ongoing. Online DEM data on this site will be updated in mid-2005, with future improvements to include clipping of shorelines and improved interpolation of voids (using GTOPO30 global topographic data).

To access the data simply click the Data Search & Download option (left sidebar). You are then presented with a dialog to enter the bounding coordinates, or you can select tiles from a map. Click Search and then once a file(s) is found you can download via ftp or http... nice! Note: as a test I selected a file in the Pacific NW... one tile was 45 MB in size. For small-scale mapping projects these data will likely become the DEM data of choice!
