Jones-Onslow EMC and MassGIS Named Recipients of GITA’s Innovator Award

06 March 2005
March 7, 2005: Denver, Colo.—The Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA) announced today that Jones-Onslow Electric Membership Corp. of Jacksonville, N.C., and the Office of Geographic and Environmental Information at MassGIS, Boston, Mass., were each named the recipients of the 2005 GITA Innovator Award.
The awards were presented during the Opening Session of GITA’s Annual Conference 28, being held March 6-9, at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.
Jones-Onslow EMC developed its own geographic information system (GIS) over the last 10 years, resulting in an integrated and seamless consumer information system, financial management system, and mapping facilities system for the electric utility. The GIS runs on one database, and the information resides in one location. Much of the software for the project was developed for Jones-Onslow EMC and is now being sold and distributed by other organizations.
The MassGIS Open Geospatial Information System-based Web Mapping Services project, started in 2000, provides always-on access to all of the data contained in the MassGIS data repository through a variety of interfaces. The system provides a vendor-neutral, standards-based data repository of all MassGIS maps, geospatial data, and geoprocessing services. New data, instantly available through Web services, is continuously added to the catalog.
