The Historic Architecture and Archaeological Geographic Information System - HAARGIS - a tool that has been developed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA) to manage information about the historic and prehistoric properties that it is charged to protect. The application provides access to an abundance of data on the state's historic resources.
The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency is now offering HAARGIS - a computer database that serves up a full plate of information about Illinois' historic resources. The Preservation Services Division has created the Historic Architectural and Archaeology Resources Geographic Information System (HAARGIS) to enable the public to locate and retrieve information about Illinois' cultural resources.
Three applications of HAARGIS have been created for varied users: a Web application on the Internet for the general public (http://www.state.il.us/hpa/ps/haargis.htm); a Web application on our local area network for our staff users; and an enhanced application utilizing ESRI’s ArcGIS software for staff
This Web site functions as a research tool, not an up-to-the-minute inventory about every historic and/or architecturally significant property in the state. This tool allows researchers to investigate and review potentially significant properties according to the best data that is available in Illinois' historic preservation office. Sites of local designation or those contained in local surveys are still being added to this system.
