ESRI's ArcWeb Services Provides the Geographic Component to Performance Analysis Technology
Redlands, California-ESRI announced today that MotionBased Technologies, located in Sausalito, California, has deployed ESRI's ArcWeb Services for its international Web site dedicated to helping endurance athletes and others train better. This innovative Internet-based performance analysis and mapping tool for global positioning system (GPS) and heart rate information recently won Popular Science Magazine's "2004 Best of What's New for Recreation." MotionBased Technologies implemented ESRI's ArcWeb Services to include geographic information system (GIS) content and capabilities in their Internet application without having to host the data or develop the mapping tools in-house. Clark Weber, cofounder and principal, MotionBased Technologies, says, "The moment ArcWeb Services became available our vision of mapping individual performance became reality. ESRI's ArcWeb Services were the most affordable and provided the largest amount of map data on the market. Even better, ESRI handles the data storage and maintenance so we can concentrate on creating the best Web site for outdoor enthusiasts on the market today. A small start up company such as ours could not have technically or financially offered a consumer mapping application without ArcWeb Services."
MotionBased.com is an online subscription service for people using GPS units to track time, distance, speed, elevation and heart rate, and in their outdoor activities such as biking, running, and cross country skiing. "Some people are even using this to track their daily commute to find the most efficient route between home and work," says Weber. "Beyond tracking performance metrics, outdoor activities where mapping your route for archiving or navigating purposes make a nice fit as well." ArcWeb Services supplies the mapping functionality behind the MotionBased.com Map Player, which displays the downloaded GPS route of an activity. The backgrounds on the Map Player, which include streets and a variety of satellite imagery and maps in commonly used scales and projections, provide a subscriber with geographic context when viewing activity routes. MotionBased Technologies currently supports the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and New Zealand. The company anticipates supporting the European data that is included in ArcWeb Services within the coming month, and global data in the next three months. The Map Player aspect allows subscribers to simulate the activity along a map and elevation profile with a moving dot indicator. Subscribers can share their routes, virtually race each other, or compare their own times on a particular activity. MotionBased Technologies is offering two account types. MotionBased Lite is a free service limited to tracking and analyzing a subscriber's ten most recent activities and MotionBased Standard is between $8 and $12 a month and has unlimited activity storage.
