Spotlight on MAPublisher - a powerful map production product

It was back in December, 2004 when Avenza Software (Toronto, Canada) announced the latest release of their flagship product; MAPublisher 6.1 for Adobe Illustrator. Simply put, MAPublisher is a powerful map production product for creating cartographic-quality maps from your GIS data. MAPublisher adds several dozen cartography and map editing tools to Illustrator and Freehand to facilitate high-end map production.
Supported Formats
MAPublisher provides users with "simple" import capabilities and advanced functionality. Using the Simple option, users can quickly import existing data, particularly useful for those with a single piece of data made up of one file with a single coordinate system and projection. The Advanced option is suitable for users with multiple data products comprised of numerous map projections, scales, and projections.
Please note that data imported into the Illustrator environment using MAPublisher will have geographic and attribute information preserved in order to provide for further thematic mapping and analysis. (example, select out features and display based on an attribute)
Supported data formats: At version 6x, MAPublisher supports most commonly used vector GIS data formats and can import DXF, DWG, e00, .gen, .SHP, mif/mid, .tab, dgn, rt1, bw1, dlg, ddf, txt, csv, and .dat.
MAPublisher will export to the following supported GIS formats; DWF, DWG, .e00, .gen, .shp, mif/mid, .tab, and .dgn
Users of USGS public domain data products will find the support for the USGS Digital Line Graph dta (.dlg), USGS SDTS (.ddf) and TIGER/Line files (.rt1 & .bw1) very useful. Note that MAPublisher is a 2D program and thus, does not support 3D data and will treat as two dimensional when imported.
Functionality
So what can you do with MAPublisher? Good question! Numerous benefits are made possible and all serve to provide the user with the tools that most GIS products lack to develop the high-quality output necessary for "print quality" final output. Some other key benefits that users can realize include:
enhanced map editing while working with your existing GIS data in a graphics environment that preserves coordinates and other spatial information.
import/export - data can be taken to and from your existing GIS environment while preserving the integrity of your data
merge multiple data products (something difficult if not impossible in a typical GIS plot layout environment)
cross-platform compatibility enables both PC and MAC users to work on your output
register raster imagery to your vector data
summarize features and generate statistics
automated map index creation and grid generation
enhanced labeling options including label with leaders, along paths, above lines
supports multiple user network environment for project collaboration
Recall 6.0
This major product upgrade introduced a number of key enhancements for users. Most notably:
New importers to facilitate simple, or advanced import of GIS data
Introduction of the Map View palette provides for rapid reprojection of your data. Enables working with multiple data layers and projections with the ability to drag and drop from one view to another
Quickly apply custom legends based on styles and symbols using Map StyleSheets
Point data based on vector symbology (rather than text). The Point Plot function uses symbols that are available in the Illustrator symbols palette.
Enhanced security to prevent unauthorized copying of the software
New at 6.1
Available as a single plug-in to increase speed and performance. filter to join points based on attribute values. This tool will generate a line string joining common points, and is ideal for GPS data.
Scaling and rotation of point symbols based on a specified variable or by the contents of an attribute column. This filter will also allow text objects to be rotated.
Projections: Search Projection - perform a keyword search of the 4500 supported coordinate systems to find the projection that you require. copy the coordinates of a known point by simply holding down the shift key and clicking on the page. This function is ideal for quickly building point files.
Remove MAPublisher Info - MAPublisher 6.1 contains functionality to quickly remove all MAPublisher information from your file.
The MAPublisher 6.1 Update includes the very latest updates to the core FME library from Safe Software.
System Requirements (PC)
Adobe Illustrator CS or Adobe Illustrator 1.0x Intel Pentium III or 4 Windows 2000 with SP3 (or Windows XP) 256 MB RAM 300 MB disk space available
Note... MAPublisher is also compatible with MAC OSX v.10.2 or greater running on a PowerPC G$ (or greater)
MAPublisher is widely used across a number of disciplines including private, public, and academic users. Numerous success stories are available from a variety of users including: - atlas and map publishers (NGS) - leading publication houses (New York Times, Washington Post) - Government (Ordnance Survey, USGS, CIA) - Academic (Smithsonian Institute, Flemming College) - Corporate users (EXXON, Sprint) - Utilities (Hydro Quebec, South Florida Water)
5 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT MAPublisher BUT SHOULD!
Stylesheets enable users to assign Illustrator specific symbology to features based on attribute values. Styles for Point, Line, and Area features are supported in Illustrator 10 while Illustrator CS also supports style definitions for Text layers
Caption options enable users to create highly-customizable scale bars that contain extra information - 11 different North Arrow styles are provided
Users with no ability to add rater imagery to their output can easily add and register raster images to their vector data within MAPublisher. Useful to enhance output with the addition of DRG, DEM, or DOQQs. Non-georeferenced images can be exported as a GeoTIFF or other supported image format while incorporating the host MAP views coordinate system.
Copy & Paste map objects between map layers while retaining attribute and geographic integrity of your data. Darg & drop map projections is very slick as well!
Having trouble creating over-sized output? The size can be set as desired and anything that Illustrator or Freeehand can do MAPublisher can do.
SAMPLES
Every year Avenza software hosts the MAPublisher Map Awards competition. The contest recognizes exemplary use of MAPublisher and features some amazing sample products created using the product (some 75 entries were featured in 2004). You'll likely recognize many of the winners particularly as you walk through the popular Map Gallery at the International ESRI user conference or browse through the ESRI Map Book.
One fine map from 2004 that captured the award in the geologic mapping category was the 2004 Pine County Geologic Atlas from the Minnesota DNR. Myselef having done loads of geologic mapping in my days as a GIS analyst/consultant, I can attest as to how difficult creating compelling output can be, particularly since geologic mapping requires the use of many intricate symbols, map legends, text labels, and custom line styles. This is just one fine sample of a great mapping product created with the help of MAPublisher.

Another favorite MAPublisher generated product of mine is this map of Lake Erie from Canadian Geographic (see below). Once again, I'm likely partial to "hydrographic" maps as I spent lots of time in my "past life" working on similar projects (FYI, I've worked on aquaculture maps, Arctic Sailing directions Atlas', kelp bed mapping, and shellfish surveys in B.C, Canada. I also did most of the mapping in a project to visualize and study the effects of raising the water level in the Greater Victoria watershed).

If you're still a bit unsure as to why you would want [need] to add MAPublisher to your "toolbox" here's a brief product summary and description from Ted Florence, President, Avenza Software Inc. that pretty much sums it all up:
MAPublisher is a suite of plugins that add GIS and mapping functionality to Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Freehand effectively bridging the gap between GIS and vector graphics. The idea is that in order to really make a good map you need to be in the right environment for doing so. As most, if not all, GIS's lack at design and cartographic functions and ease of use therein, many people like to and prefer to use a vector design environment like Illustrator or FreeHand to do the design work. MApublisher imports most common GIS data formats and then adds a tons of tools for using the data in the vector graphics environment.
