Historic and Modern Air Photo Online Service Launched by Cities Revealed  E-mail
Written by Cities Revealed
19 January 2005
December 2004 : Cambridge. For the first time, detailed aerial photography captured during 1940s and1950s as well as present day photography are now available online from The GeoInformation® Group, publishers of Cities Revealed™.

The new service, called Cities Revealed Online™ found at http://www.citiesrevealed.com, can be accessed by members of the public and business users alike with the option to search using a place name, postcode or national grid reference, immediately view a watermarked image of their choice, purchase with a credit card, and download a digital aerial photograph direct to their desktop.

All this can be done in a matter of minutes and without the need to sign up or commit to a minimum number of purchases.  Users benefit from being able to see both historic and modern imagery of their choice before they decide to buy and with immediate download there is no waiting around for the delivery of their image.
Available through the online service is imagery covering large parts of the UK from German Luftwaffe flown between 1939 to1942, RAF captured between 1945 and 1954, Cities Revealed flown from 2000 to present day, and a complete UK coverage from NASA’s Landsat 7 satellite imaged between 1999 and 2002.

“We are extremely excited about the launch of this online service that will enable users to search and view large parts of the UK not only to see what is there today but also what was there some 60 years ago.  With a fascination in revealing our past, we are in no doubt that this system will provide a valuable service and endless source of fascination from both a personal and business perspective”, comments Alun Jones, Managing Director and co-founder of The GeoInformation Group.

Available from as little as £14.95 for a home user or £21.95 for a business user license, the photography is received directly on the desktop in an A2, A3 and A4 format and in a GIS compatible format for business users.

More Information on Cities Revealed Online
The online service was designed to deliver access via the Internet to the Cities Revealed modern day imagery archive, and has been enhanced to include historic imagery from the 1940’s and 50’s and modern day satellite imagery.

The online service provides access to modern and historic imagery for the UK.
This includes:

German Luftwaffe 1939 – 1942
50 towns and cities flown by the German Luftwaffe flown between 1939 and 1942 (at launch, London and Liverpool are online).  Black and White prints and photo mosaics created by the German Luftwaffe and held at the Imperial War Museum and the US national Archives in Washington DC have been scanned and rectified by The GeoInformation Group to create a 50cm seamless mosaiced database for available areas.

RAF 1945 – 1954
600 towns and cities across the whole of the UK flown by The RAF between 1945 and 1954, covering over 45,000 sq km of the UK.  Black and white prints, film from various archives and over 2000 photomap sheets published by the Ordnance Survey have been scanned, rectified and created into a 1m resolution seamless image database.

Cities Revealed 2000 – present day
The Cities Revealed archive contains colour aerial imagery databases rectified to the UK National Grid covering over 250 towns and cities across the UK at resolutions of 12.5 cm and 6.25 cm and updated on a three year basis.

NASA Satellite Imagery 1999 - 2002
Satellite data has been incorporated from NASA’s Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mappper satellite.  This provides a false colour, 14.85m resolution fully rectified and mosaiced image layer of the UK.

Many images from the 1945 RAF image layer were originally censored and The GeoInformation Group has sought to replace these with uncensored versions, so providing a real view of 1940’s and 50’s Britain

The online system has been developed in association with The GeoInformation Group French partner InterAtlas, an experienced provider of online imaging services.

Users can access the data by one of a number of search options, place names, postcodes (both provided by Ordnance Survey) and UK National Grid.
