City of Glenwood Springs and Blue Marble Team Up to Win First Place in Web Mapping Contest!  E-mail
Written by Blue Marble Geographics
15 November 2004
Gardiner, Maine – November 15, 2004 - Blue Marble Geographics (www.bluemarblegeo.com) announced today that their Internet Mapping Solution, BeyondGeo, won first place in the Directions Magazine web-mapping contest for its design of the City of Glenwood Springs, Colorado community website.

This contest was conducted solely at the discretion of Directions Magazine.  Blue Marble and The City of Glenwood Springs played no role in the development, design, or deployment of the contest.

Blue Marble has been writing GIS software tools and solutions for over 10 years. Their technology is embedded in hundreds of GIS applications currently used by military, oil exploration, civil engineering, surveying, technology and corporate GIS systems. BeyondGeo is a simple and complete Internet map service that enables businesses and organizations to easily and cost-effectively publish interactive, database-driven maps on their web site. Blue Marble currently serves over 120,000 customers in over 120 countries.

The Directions Magazine web-mapping contest was conducted to determine the latest and greatest use of mapping technology found on the Internet today.  Some 85 mapmaking companies participated in this contest. The maps were divided into three categories: Government, Business, and Miscellaneous.  The City of Glenwood Springs Map was voted the number one government map, beating out 49 other maps in that category.

“We went with BeyondGeo because the upfront and ongoing costs are far less than other solutions, with less setup effort, and all the system maintenance provided by BeyondGeo.  We are very pleased with the GOIMS server's performance and the services provided by Blue Marble,” stated Mike Pelletier Senior Planner, City of Glenwood Springs.  “I outlined the desired map setup and the helpful staff at Blue Marble provided the initial setup, offering constructive suggestions along the way.”

The City of Glenwood Springs is able to answer a key demand from their customers for distributing information on their website.  Anyone who is on their web site, http://www.ci.glenwood-springs.co.us/ can easily navigate to the map and get up-to-date parcel, street, trail routes, bike routes, and other municipal information using an interactive map.  The map is unique in that it starts with a view from space of the city as it lies over a topo image.  As the user zooms in the digital topo falls away to be replace be a high-resolution ortho image.  The user has the option of turning on the various layers mentioned earlier as well as many more.  The map is available at http://www.ci.glenwood-springs.co.us/goims/mapping.htm
