GeoVantage announces GIS Day open house: to be held at Beverly Municipal Airport PDF Print E-mail

Event will offer unique opportunity to learn about aerial photography for GIS and see GeoVantage camera sensor technology up close on plane.
Swampscott, MA, November 2, 2004 – GeoVantage, Inc. today announced that it will hold an open house on GIS Day - Wednesday, November 17, 2004, at the offices of General Aviation Services at the Beverly Municipal Airport, Beverly, MA. The event will showcase the vital role aerial photography plays in geographic information system (GIS) programs. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to view GeoVantage’s digital camera sensor system up close – actually installed on an aircraft in the airport hanger.

Held each year on the Wednesday of National Geographic Society’s Geography Awareness Week (November 14–20 in 2004), GIS Day is a global event that celebrates GIS technology. Geotechnology was recently cited by the U.S. Department of Labor as one of three technologies with the greatest growth and job-creation potential in the current decade.*

A GIS is a computer-based mapping tool that takes information from a database about a location, such as streets, buildings, water features, and terrain, and turns it into visual layers. The ability to see geographic features on a map gives users a better understanding of a particular location, enabling planners, analysts, and others to make informed decisions about their communities.

GeoVantage uses proprietary technologies to capture and process the GIS-ready imagery upon which these maps are built. The GeoVantage camera system includes an integrated global positioning system (GPS) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) ensuring that the imagery can be precisely matched to geographic location. A high-resolution digital camera array captures both full color and near infrared imagery accurate to within 3 meters, at resolutions of .25 meter to 1.25 meters.

GeoVantage’s GIS Day event will be held the morning of Wednesday, November 17, 2004, from 9am – 12pm. Due to space limitations, RSVP is requested: please contact Karen Renzi at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or 781.599.4664, x121.
