KWIC - The Kids’ Well-being Indicators Clearinghouse  E-mail
Written by Glenn Letham (GISuser editor)
25 October 2004
The Kids’ Well-being Indicators Clearinghouse (KWIC) is a tool to gather, plot and monitor NYS children’s health, education and well-being indicator data in order to improve outcomes for children and families. KWIC is a valuable tool for policy development, planning, and accountability.

Users are invited to design an Interactive Map with KWIC's
Map Builder.

Features of the Map Builder are:

  • Adjust Data Intervals – The default intervals, based on the NYS median rate, can be customized or changed to equal quartiles.

  • Make Comparisons Across Years – By locking the intervals, maps become comparable across years.

  • Customize a Region – Use the rectangular or circular selection or hold down the shift key and click on counties to define a region and produce a region profile.

  • Save a Customized Region - Select the Save Selection in the Selection Tools to store and later recall a selected county or customized region.

  • Export Profile Data – Once a region is selected, the resulting profile can be copied and pasted into an excel worksheet.

  • Display Demographic Data Over Indicators – For demographic data, proportional circles can be displayed over indicators and other demographic indicators. For indicator data, proportional circles can only be displayed over the respective indicator.

  • Print Maps – A printer-friendly version of a map is available with the necessary supporting documentation.

  • Zoom in on the Big Apple – Click the apple in the Zoom and Pan options and enlarge the New York City area.

  • Need Help – Learn about the features and functionality of the Map Builder by clicking the light bulb in the lower right corner.

  • Add much, much more – display histograms, add roads, county names, legislative districts layers...

The map above shows annual dropouts, Grades 9-12

A number of vaiables can be mapped, with data provided by the State Department of Health, US Census Bureau, DOL, and many other agencies.
