GeoConnections' GeoSkills program is partnering with Wilfrid Laurier University to develop recommendations for including geospatial concepts in the Ontario secondary school curriculum.
Phase I of the Geomatics Curriculum Development Research project will analyze the extent to which geography courses deal with fundamental geospatial concepts. This analysis will involve reviewing literature, analyzing Ontario curriculum documents and geography courses, and consulting with Ontario teachers. Phase II will determine the extent to which courses other than geography incorporate geospatial concepts. Based on these findings, a final report, expected in March 2005, will recommend standard guidelines for integrating geomatics into Ontario's secondary school curriculum. The project is expected to raise awareness, knowledge, and understanding of geomatics among students; develop stronger partnerships between GeoConnections' GeoSkills program and university geographers; and better expose university and secondary school educators to the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure.
