NEWARK CA, September 27, 2004: RMSI, a global IT services company, announced that they have recently developed an exhaustive cartography geo-database covering entire North America for one of its clients Universal Map – A leading publisher and distributor of geographic information for the United States.
Says, Rajesh Kalra, Executive Vice President, RMSI “The customized cartographically enabled geo-database enhances visual presentation, increases usage, and enables easier management of updates, editing, text placement, cartographic styling and product development for publishing of road atlases”.
The project demanded deep-domain technical expertise and the effective integration of popular GIS and software platforms such as ESRI ArcGIS, AutoDesk, Adobe, Coreldraw etc. Different sources both vector and paper, and reference material were used for selective integration and creation of an accurate GIS database. Since the project involved developing a very large amount of spatial data with many data layers using a variety of GIS platforms, automation and customization of processes was done to meet the timelines and maintain the accuracy levels. Customization was done using Arc Objects, ARX, VB, Auto Lisp and C++ technologies. The entire project was subdivided into pre-production, data development, cartography production, layout / print-ready file production and edit proofs.
The project involved multiple-step processing of inputs received from the client such as topology cleaning to correct hanging/ overshooting segments and incorrect common boundaries between adjacent area polygons, attribute data linking, edge matching to facilitate seamless geo-database development etc. Data from more than 1500 layers was cleaned and organized into approximately 100 data layers.
Apart from cartography enabled geo-database, print-ready files in PDF and EPS formats were prepared and delivered to the client. Universal Map received a versatile cartography enabled geo-database which with slight modifications, can be re packaged as wall / fold / flip maps, regional map products and country map products. Because of extensive process automation techniques, RMSI ensured that the client benefited in terms of reduced costs, improved quality and quick turnaround time.
