Google local is a Beta test site provided by the search engine giant, designed to help surfers seek out and find geographically relevant information via their web search. The premise... the search is focused on a specific geographic location. Adding to that, maps and driving directions are presented with the results.
Some of the key offerings of Google local and useful tips:
More than 4 billion web pages are analyzed in your search
If you perform numerous local searches centered on the same place (e.g., your home or office), you can save time by checking the “Remember this Location” box at http://local.google.com.
Hits are ranked according to search relevance, not geography, therefore, a hit that's directly in the middle of your search criteria may rank lower as it is not directly relevant.
Search results can be constrained by distance with users optionally specifying a search range of 1, 5, or 15 miles
Geographic criteria can be specified by address, ZIP code, or city name
Google Local only spiders US businesses at this time

To test the functionality I requested a search on the term "oysters" with a geographic criteria of Seattle, WA. I was presented with a number of oyster markets and restaurants. To my pleasant surprise, Elliots Oyster House (THE best place for Oysters in Seattle) was listed in the Top 10 (see http://www.elliottsoysterhouse.com/) ... pretty good! Clicking on the Elliott's Oyster House link returns detailed address and a map. I now have options to request a more detailed map or driving directions - Directions and maps are provided by Mapquest (data by Navteq).
Search results are presented in a familiar display
Clicking on a "hit" results in additional "yellow page-like" information
Google local was launched back in March, 2004. The company boasts that users will have access to an expanded number of pages that are indexed as well as "improved" relevance technology.
