Edmonton, AB - The Alberta Department of Energy (DoE), was presented with an Award of Excellence at ESRI Canada's Regional User Conference in Edmonton.
Alex Miller, President of ESRI Canada, presented the award in recognition of the Department of Energy's Enterprise Geographic Information System (GIS) implementation for mineral management. More than 200 GIS professionals were on hand for the presentation, which was one of the highlights of the conference.
"The Alberta Department of Energy has created a truly enterprise GIS solution that has automated processes, resulting in greater efficiency and increased time savings," said Mr. Miller. "By working to meet the needs of the DoE users, GIS applications have been provided for the management of mineral rights data and the production of maps to enable the sharing of information among departments."
The Department of Energy is responsible for the management of Alberta's resource development portfolio that includes the commodities of natural gas, conventional oil, oil sands, petrochemicals, electricity, coal, and minerals. The Alberta Department of Energy seeks to maintain a competitive environment that attracts continued investment in its energy and mineral resources to ensure the sustained contribution from Alberta's energy and mineral resources for the long-term interests of Albertans.
The Resource Land Access business unit is an essential part of the Oil Development Division of the Alberta Department of Energy. The office consists of three distinct work units providing guidance and support for sustained access to mineral rights, their disposition and management. The business unit is comprised of three working groups: Land Access and Development, Geology, and GIS Mapping and Data Services.
The DoE recently migrated to the ArcGIS Desktop because of the ability to store data for the entire enterprise and its easy to use interface. Today ArcGIS is used to manage their data and create a variety of map products to support decision making by internal users and industry stakeholders.
"I'm happy to receive this award on behalf of the Alberta Department of Energy, we've moved very quickly from out-of-the-box functionality to an automated process," said Lori Husak, Manager of GIS Mapping and Data Services. "In the past staff manually created analogue maps, and today have the tools to manage data and produce maps in an enterprise geodatabase. We are in the process of expanding our mapping capabilities by developing an external mapping site to provide industry stakeholders with access to mineral rights information."
In addition to the desktop migration, the Alberta Department of Energy has redeveloped an advanced suite of GIS application tools called XMap, and a data viewer called One Button Sketch (OBS). DoE produces thousands of maps, sketches, and reports both for internal decision makers and for industry stakeholders every year. XMap is a one window interface that allows for detailed search and data extraction tools that are finely tuned to the complex needs of the DoE. The OBS viewer is available to all Department users that interface to XMap and allows for the quick sketch of and presentation of maps and data.
