Where were you on the night of Tuesday, November 6, 2012? I bet at some point during the evening you were looking at election maps. Don't worry, you definitely weren't alone.
Ever wondered just how all those amazing maps and data feeds are created and pushed out to the masses on election night? This past November, MapBox was contracted by USA Today to do just that... mashup election data, provide stunning visualizations and more - truly an incredible task! A recent blog post from MapBox describes in details just how the team designed a web app that ingested vast amounts of real-time data and powered the USA Today election dashboard, provided a number of embeddable views and more.
Kudos to the team on providing some insight as to how these real-time (almost) visualizations and feeds were developed and for you developer types or would-be developers, be sure to scour this piece for tips to a number of tools and resources that you can use in your next app or WMS. Some of the resource discussed in the post include: mapbox.com, TileMill, D3.js, R2D2, D3 (smooth transitions), QGIS, PostGIS, and GDAL OGR.
