From the Univeristy of London (UK) comes this web-based post-graduate degree program in GIS. The programme is targetted primarily at graduates working in the GI industry who wish to add theoretical underpinnings to their practical skills to enable them to develop real world applications in the field of geographic information.

The School of Geography, Birkbeck College offers a Masters degree in GISc for professionals and researchers working with geographically referenced data. The degree builds on 20+ years of experience in GISc at Birkbeck College. It is taught by Paul Elsner with contributions from Prof. David Unwin, Rob Mahoney, Mat Disney, Martin Frost, Carolina Tobon, Sue Brooks, Prof. Martin Callingham, Prof. Mark Hepworth, Carl Calvert, Jon Spinney, Matt Foote, Stewart Berry and Gillian Harper, providing expertise in GIS from backgrounds in public and private consultancy, academia, software provision, private industry and utilities. The programme covers the philosophical, scientific, social, policy, environmental and technological issues associated with the use of GI in an international context.

Course duration is listed as Two years 'part-time' or one year 'full-time'. For student visa and registry purposes, both study modes are considered part-time. Academic year spans Sept/Oct-Sept.

Admission: The equivalent of an undergraduate second class honours degree in geography, computer science or a cognate discipline. Professional GIS experience will be considered in place of an undergraduate degree. Competency in the use of a GIS is required. Professional GIS experience is desirable. Satisfactory competence in English must be demonstrated.

Occasional coursework (generally beginning late in the first term) will require the use of a desktop GIS package such as ArcView, Maptitude, GeoMedia, MapInfo or Smallworld. Students are expected to have some knowledge of one or more of these programs. Other requirements include proficiency in the use of:

word processor

spreadsheet

IM - instant messaging

MS Office 2000 suite

A special arrangement has been arranged with ESRI UK that enables students to have special pricing/licensing on their products.

Fees (Subject to change)

  • 12 month programme ('full-time') UK and EU £4362 (full cost for one year).
  • 12 month programme ('full-time') Overseas £5706 (full cost for one year).
  • 24 month programme ('part-time') UK and EU £2124 (cost for year 1 of 2 years).
