(Sacramento, CA, USA: June 27, 2012) The Linux Professional Institute
(LPI), the world's premier Linux certification organization
(http://www.lpi.org), announced that Linux Essentials, which introduces
new users and youth to Linux and Open Source Software, is now available
at select LPI affiliate locations and IT events in Europe, Middle East
and Africa. The single Linux Essentials' exam leads to a "Certificate of
Achievement".
"LPI empowers its affiliate partners around the world to develop the
best means of promoting professional careers in Linux and Open Source
Our affiliates in Europe, Middle East and Africa will be spearheading
our efforts to implement the Linux Essentials program--they have
exceeded all expectations in the timely development of this new exam."
said Jim Lacey, president and CEO of LPI. Mr. Lacey went on
to explain that LPI affiliates will begin to offer Linux Essentials'
exams at paper-based testing (PBT) events this summer and in some
instances will begin to offer the exam through LPI-affiliated
internet-based testing (IBT) locations.
Training services, schools, educational authorities and other
organization interested in offering the Linux Essentials' exam should
contact their local LPI Master Affiliate for further information: http://www.lpi.org/international-affiliates/affiliate-locations
The Linux Essentials program has been under development by LPI for
approximately two years and includes the participation of qualification
authorities, academic partners, private trainers, publishers, government
organizations, volunteer IT professionals and Linux and Open Source
experts. The single Linux Essentials' exam leading to a "Certificate of
Achievement" recognizes knowledge of the following subject matter:
* The Linux Community and a Career in Open Source
* Popular Operating Systems and Major Open Source Applications
* Understanding Open Source Software and Licensing
* Linux Command Line Basics, Files and Scripts
Other Program elements:
* regional links to employment and apprenticeship programs
available to youth in Linux and Open Source careers (Fall 2012)
* support for skills competitions such as Worldskills
International: http://www.worldskills.org/
* support for teacher collaboration and sharing of learning
exercises for the Linux Essentials' knowledge base
* commitments from major IT courseware and content publishers on
exam preparatory resources
* a “low-stakes” exam available online either through LPI or
partner internet-based testing
* a PDF “Certificate of Achievement”
In addition, to traditional PBT events, LPI is also developing two new
methods of internet-based testing (IBT) through accredited testing
locations. This method of test delivery requires a computer lab,
proctor, and a secure browser. IBT solutions are being developed with
LPI and long time LPI affiliate L’Agence universitaire de la
Francophonie (AUF: http://www.lpi-francophonie.org/spip.php?article159)
and Yardstick Software Inc. of Edmonton, Canada (http://getyardstick.com/).
