Dayton, Ohio - June 14, 2012 - Georgetown County, South Carolina GIS Department is implementing mobile GIS on smartphones and tablets for the County’s Public Works Department. Utilizing Esri ArcGIS Server in conjunction with Freeance Mobile the County will create and maintain in-house mobile workflow applications geared towards automating the Public Works field crews.
Public Works Director, Ray Funnye sees smartphones as a tool that allows individuals to collect and share information live from the field. He plans to utilize the handheld technology by performing inspections for facilities/properties, landfill and other County assets. The County Public Works Department is accredited by APWA. The County has a safety policy that every employee must read once a year. Plans are to create a hyperlink in the mobile application and integrate with GIS that will allow users to be directed to the corresponding subject matter in the safety manual that is related to the job.
The GIS department also sees applications moving to smartphones as a way to reduce cost and effort required to continually load and unload data from mobile laptops. Utilizing Freeance Mobile will allow the County GIS Department to build custom GIS and GPS form applications for iPhones, Androids, BlackBerrys and tablet devices, such as the iPad, without programming.
