Woolpert Buys Leica ALS70, Upgrades ALS60, for Enhanced LiDAR Acquisitions E-mail
GIS News - LiDAR
Written by Leica Geosystems Inc.
09 March 2012

NORCROSS, Georgia, USA, 9 March 2012 – Leica Geosystems Inc. today announced that Woolpert has purchased a new Leica ALS70-HP airborne laser scanner and upgraded its existing ALS60 LiDAR. Woolpert says the superior power of the ALS70 and upgraded ALS60 laser scanners will enable it to complete large-area statewide mapping projects, as well as numerous other LiDAR acquisitions, faster than previously possible.

“The power of the Leica ALS70 will allow us to fly higher and faster while still achieving the desired accuracy and point density,” said Jeff Lovin, Woolpert Senior Vice President and Director of Geospatial Services. “The ALS70 will allow us to provide greater efficiency to our clients.”

Based in Dayton, Ohio, Woolpert is a national geospatial, architecture & engineering firm and was among the first to purchase a commercial LiDAR system. With six aircraft deployed, the firm has become the leader in statewide mapping projects, flying tens of thousands of square miles per year with its airborne LiDAR and camera systems. Woolpert has owned and operated every LiDAR scanner in the Leica ALS series, including the ALS40, ALS50, and ALS60.

“Since 1999 when Woolpert purchased its first commercial LiDAR system, it has been an innovator in the application of high-accuracy elevation data in topographic mapping for many disciplines,” said Jean Gardiner, General Manager of Leica Geospatial Solutions. “The unique Point Density Multiplier technology makes our LiDARs the most productive available, and the ALS70-HP can be upgraded to the higher-flying-height ALS70-HA configuration.”

The Leica ALS70 is an affordable airborne laser scanner with a 500 kHz maximum effective pulse rate, designed specifically for high-density point collection in diverse environments. The Leica ALS70-HP version purchased by Woolpert was developed for general purpose mapping over a wide variety of terrain at different flying heights. The upgraded ALS60 offers a complete transformation to the ALS70-HP configuration, with effective pulse rate and scanning capabilities identical to the ALS70.

“We upgraded the ALS60 for consistent data collection in our large-area projects where we deploy multiple aircraft simultaneously,” said Lovin.

In addition to large-area statewide mapping, Woolpert plans to expand its use of the Leica scanners into what it sees as a rapidly growing market for high-accuracy LiDAR data sets. According to Lovin, Woolpert clients in the geospatial, architecture & engineering design arena are increasingly asking for high-density LiDAR point data for true 3D mapping applications, and the firm plans to deploy the new Leica ALS70 and upgraded ALS60 to serve those markets.
