The New York Times Election 2012 App Comes to Android E-mail
GIS News - Mobile Technology
Written by The New York Times Company
28 February 2012
App Is the Latest Addition to the Suite of Products Featuring The Times’s Authoritative Political Coverage

NEW YORK-- The New York Times today announced the launch of its Election 2012 app for Android, an essential destination and comprehensive resource for those following the 2012 presidential campaign. The app is available now on Google’s Android Market.

“With the new Election 2012 Android app, we’re now offering live election results and maps across five different mobile apps and our mobile Web site. It’s another example of how we’re extending our tradition of digital innovation to the mobile world.”

The launch of the Android app follows the introduction of The Times’s Election 2012 app for iPhone, which hit the iTunes Store in December. Like the iPhone app, the Android app combines The Times’s extensive political coverage with top campaign news from around the Web, hand-picked exclusively for the app by a Times editor.

“Now political junkies can take advantage of our one-stop shop for campaign news and analysis no matter what smartphone they use,” said Fiona Spruill, editor, emerging platforms, The New York Times. “With the new Election 2012 Android app, we’re now offering live election results and maps across five different mobile apps and our mobile Web site. It’s another example of how we’re extending our tradition of digital innovation to the mobile world.”

Both the Android and iPhone apps now offer new features since the initial launch of the iPhone app in December, including:

  • Live results on primary and election nights
  • County-by-county maps for every primary and caucus
  • Voting projections from Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight blog
  • A delegate tracker for the Republican nomination
  • Enhanced live blogging, with up-to-the-minute analysis during debates and primary nights
  • Tip sheets of must-read articles curated by political experts from battleground states

Like the iPhone app, the Android app aggregates The Times’s inclusive campaign coverage, including The Caucus and FiveThirtyEight blogs, as well as campaign-related columns, Op-Eds and editorials from the Opinion section.

Its central news feed is continuously updated by a dedicated editor and includes live election results alongside a curated selection of links to articles, blog posts, videos and tweets from other sources. It is personalized to highlight new content since the user’s last visit.

In addition, the Election 2012 app also houses the Election Guide, a dynamic collection of campaign data compiled by The Times. The Election Guide includes a database of the latest polls from The Times and elsewhere; candidate profile pages with continuously updated information including bios, campaign finance, poll results and tweets; and state profiles with reports that include demographic numbers, past primary winners and delegate rules.

New York Times readers who don’t have an Android smartphone, iPhone or iPod Touch can visit NYTimes.com’s new Election 2012 mobile site at mobile.nytimes.com/2012 for many of the same features.

The Election 2012 app is available for free from Google’s Android Market on all Android smartphone devices or at NYTimes.com/electionapp. Access to the app’s top six stories is available to anyone who downloads Election 2012. Unlimited access to the app, including the Election Guide, is available to New York Times digital subscribers through the NYTimes.com + Smartphone app plan or the All Digital Access plan. Subscribers should log in for full access to Election 2012 as part of their existing subscriptions. Details and pricing for the subscription plans are available at www.NYTimes.com/Access.
