Esri Canada Changes to Bing Maps Token Service E-mail
Written by ESRI Canada
26 October 2011

This message came out recently for Esri Canada customers...

If you subscribe to Bing Maps services, you or someone in your organization may have already received this notice. However, due to the important nature of this message, we felt it necessary to send this notice to ensure that everyone is aware of this change.

With ArcGIS 9.3.1 Server, Bing Maps services are accessed using a Bing Maps user name and password. These credentials are used, in turn, to retrieve a token from the Bing Maps Token Service. If you use this method to access Bing Maps services, please read the following important information.

Effective March 30, 2012, the Bing Maps Token Service will be shut down by Microsoft. After this date, your user name and password will no longer be valid, and any applications connected to the Bing Maps Token Service will no longer work.

All ArcGIS Server users will be expected to use a Bing Maps key and an ArcGIS Server client that supports Bing Maps keys. A Bing Maps key is a unique identification string and is used in place of the token when making requests. The following is a list of clients that support the use of a Bing Maps key:

  • ArcGIS 10 Server Web Application Developer Framework (ADF) applications (.NET and Java) (Note that if you are using Bing Maps in a 9.3.1 Web ADF application, you will have to upgrade the application to version 10 of the ADF.)
  • ArcGIS API for JavaScript 2.x
  • ArcGIS API for Flex 2.x
  • ArcGIS API for Silverlight 2.x
  • ArcGIS for SharePoint 2.x

You have two options for obtaining a Bing Maps key:

  • Migrate to ArcGIS 10 Server and a Bing Maps key will be included. Once the server has been authorized during post-installation, the Bing Maps key is accessible through Manager.

  • If you are unable to migrate to ArcGIS 10 Server, you can request a Bing Maps key from This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for use in an ArcGIS Web API 2.x application.

For more information on using Bing Maps and Bing Maps keys with ArcGIS Server, see the
ArcGIS Online and Bing Maps Information Guide. [pdf]
