skobbler GPS Navigation 2 exceeds 100,000 UK downloads in one day E-mail

Revolutionary navigation concept underlines the increasing popularity of smartphone navigation

Berlin, Germany, 18th October 2011- skobbler, creator of the first free sat nav app for the iPhone, is delighted to announce that its next generation sat nav app, GPS Navigation 2, was downloaded more than 100,000 times this Sunday. With a total of 150,000 UK downloads since its launch last Wednesday, skobbler GPS Navigation 2 is currently the most popular of all free apps in the UK Apple App Store - a fact that may well serve as an example for both the increasing popularity of mobile phone apps for in-car navigation as well as the revolutionary navigation concept of skobbler in particular.

With over 1.6 million iOS users worldwide, skobbler is one of the most successful navigation app developers and has been Germany’s best selling navigation app for years. GPS Navigation 2 is the industry's first, universal online-offline ("hybrid") navigation app for iPhones and 3G-equipped iPads and is set to change the way we navigate forever. Not only is the app a fraction of the cost of a dedicated sat nav device, it is also cheaper and easier to maintain with free, regular map updates for life. Boasting the most comprehensive feature set of a navigation app to date, GPS Navigation 2 is available for a groundbreaking £1.49 (FREE until Wednesday*) and is truly the last sat nav you’ll ever need.

“To have experienced such success in this short amount of time is quite overwhelming and extremely encouraging. It demonstrates again just how popular mobile phone navigation is becoming,” says Philipp Kandal, co-founder, skobbler. “In several ways, the skobbler concept is a no-brainer for end-users: they can switch between online or offline navigation depending on their particular circumstances, choose which maps to install or remove depending on their needs, there’s no initial outlay for expensive GPS hardware, and map updates are frequent and free for life.”

According to a recent skobbler survey of 2000 drivers across the UK, 70% of those polled believe that smartphone navigation will replace dedicated sat navs in the near future. Users also cited disconnections and expensive map updates as their biggest frustrations, two fundamental areas that skobbler has addressed with its new hybrid sat nav solution. “I believe that this has been the key to our success,” adds Kandal. “We are over the moon that so many users have already embraced GPS Navigation 2 and are very encouraged that the concept will continue to evolve into the future of sat nav.”

* To celebrate its launch and to enable skobbler Lite customers to switch to the new app at no cost, skobbler has extended the free download period of GPS Navigation 2. The chart topping app will now be free from the Apple App Store until Wednesday 19th October, after which it will be priced at only £1.49. skobbler Lite, which was skobbler’s original free sat nav app, has been discontinued with the launch of GPS Navigation 2.
