Nautical Data International Ltd. of St. John's Newfoundland has launched a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against two Italian companies. The basis of the case is simple... NDI has an exclusive licensing deal with the Canadian Hydrographic Service to develop digital charts, the problem, 2 Italian companies are developing their own digital products derived from the same data!
The company, based out of St John's Newfoundland, Canada produces digital navigational charts based on paper maps & charts created by the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS).
According to the company, a licencing deal between the CHS and NDI gives Nautical Data the exclusive right to sell the electronic charts. However, company alleges that two companies based in Italy have been producing their own versions of the electronic charts based on the data from the CHS, and is selling them worldwide.
The plaintifs in the case are C-Map USA Inc. and Navionics Inc. A Canada.com exclusive reports that "A spokesperson for the firm says if the lawsuit is successful, it could result in over $100 million in damages and lost profits. "
