skobbler announces the future of sat nav with GPS Navigation 2 PDF Print E-mail

12 October 2011

Berlin, Germany, 12th October 2011: skobbler has today announced the availability of its next generation sat nav suite – GPS Navigation 2. The first of its kind to offer both online and offline navigation of the entire world, GPS Navigation 2 is a new sat nav concept that will change the way we navigate forever. Available from the Apple App store for only £1.49 (FREE for a limited time*) and with free map updates for life, GPS Navigation 2 is the last sat nav you’ll ever need.

With over 1.5 million iOS users worldwide, skobbler is one of the most successful navigation apps available and has been Germany’s best selling navigation app for years. Building on this success with the new version, GPS Navigation 2 is the first to offer hybrid navigation, bringing users an uninterrupted experience on the road. It’s now possible to opt to install select maps directly to a device for a minimal fee, to avoid problems caused by data connection loss in locations with poor reception, and potentially offer significant savings on data charges to a mobile – particularly useful when negotiating expensive roaming charges abroad. Maps can also be installed and removed as necessary to allow users to tailor the package to their specific travel needs, and manage what can often be limited storage capacity on mobiles, putting them in total control.

GPS Navigation 2 includes a range of improvements, boasting a completely redesigned interface and being compatible with both the full retina display of the iPhone 4 and all 3G iPads with built-in GPS. It’s also streamlined to offer faster performance on the road – client side re-routing on installed maps means that alternative directions are calculated up to 10 times faster than traditional software.

Offering a range of genuinely useful new features, a new landscape mode brings the option of widescreen viewing, the “free driving” mode allows users to use map orientation without entering a destination and an extensive range of POIs are available via the category and local search functions. You’ll also find co-ordinate based navigation and the ability to send locations to friends via email or Facebook. Installable maps from across the globe are also available – either worldwide, by continent or country specific – to cater for any situation.

“We’re confident that GPS Navigation 2 is the future of sat nav,” says Marcus Thielking, co-founder of skobbler. “Our hybrid functionality puts users in full control and addresses the biggest pet hate that Smartphone users currently have with alternative sat nav software – namely a loss of signal that can force a data disconnection and interrupt navigation. Giving users the option of utilising either online or offline maps, and choosing which to install or remove depending on their needs, is a big step forwards. It’s like having a virtual map in your pocket, and with free driving and a browsable map mode our customers will never feel lost again.”

With no hidden costs and no annual subscriptions, skobbler represents exceptional value for money and boasts many features comparable to high-end, dedicated devices. skobbler is encouraging new users, as well as existing users of the discontinued skobbler Lite to upgrade to GPS Navigation 2, which will be free until 16th October, after which it will be £1.49.

Based on the OpenStreetMap project, users will also benefit from free, regular map updates to ensure that the software is as accurate as possible. The success of OpenStreetMap means that GPS Navigation 2, especially in urban areas, is already featuring the most detailed digital maps in the world.

“According to a recent skobbler survey of 2000 drivers across the UK, 70% of those polled believe that smartphone navigation will replace dedicated sat navs in the near future,” says Thielking. “Users also cited disconnections and expensive map updates as their biggest frustrations, two key areas we are addressing with our software. We want to offer all of our existing skobbler Lite customers, as well as new users who want to experience the flexibility and accuracy of GPS Navigation 2, the chance to download our software at an unbeatable price,” says Marcus Thielking.

* To celebrate its launch and to enable skobbler Lite customers to switch to the new app at no cost, GPS Navigation 2 will be free from the Apple App Store until 16th October, after which it will be priced at only £1.49. skobbler Lite, which was skobbler’s original free sat nav app, has been discontinued with the launch of GPS Navigation 2.
