GISuser Feature Articles - Mobile GIS, GPS and Location Services (LBS)
Written by @gletham
30 December 2010
The iPhone and iOS development environment has come on strong indeed, however, it's not only about Angry Birds, Social media clients, and mobile flatulants! There's a number of powerful, enterprise-scale apps available as well as many apps that are developed specifically for the enterprise user and GIS/mapping professional. The following are a few apps that got our attention in 2010.

Avenza PDF Maps App for Apple iOS - Geospatial PDF reader for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. PDF Maps is the first application of its kind designed specifically for using geographically-aware PDF files on portable devices and opens the door to allowing any map to be GPS-aware. It will give users the power to interact with georeferenced PDF maps and images directly from their iOS device with viewing performance levels well above other mobile PDF viewing applications. Visit http://www.avenza.com/pdf-maps or see more info

Esri ArcGIS for iOS app - The app lets users collect, edit, and update features and attribute information while performing field data collection and inspection. In addition to the ArcGIS app, an API is also available that lets developers and Esri partners create focused, spatially enabled applications for iOS devices. Users of the updated ArcGIS app can: Use onboard GPS to collect and update GIS data; Attach photos and movies to collected data; Tap on the map to get information about a location. See more info

For Esri developers... ArcGIS API for iOS - The API is designed to use Web services available from ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Online. Users of the platform can access dynamic, tiled, and image map services; overlay graphics; search and identify features; locate addresses; collect and update data; and perform GIS analysis. To download or get more information about ArcGIS API for iOS, visit the ArcGIS Resource Center

skobbler ForeverMap - interactive maps of entire countries and their cities via ForeverMap 2.0. includes: offline search; location finder; route calculation; and information on places of interest, providing users with a fully interactive, offline map solution that can be used anywhere, anytime and without limitations. The app also includes extensive Wikipedia references such as history and information about landmarks, significant buildings and much more, converting the app into an intuitive electronic tour guide. AutoCAD WS - think Autodesk on your iPhone... enable AutoCAD users to edit and share AutoCAD files on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch so they can have real-time collaboration even while on the go. Intermap Accuterra  - The AccuTerra application now provides quick, one-touch access to all the major mapping functions within the application, such as recording treks, creating waypoints, accessing options, and toggling between different map views. In addition, the AccuTerra application fully leverages the In-App purchase functionality of iPhone OS 3.1 to allow users to purchase additional map content on the fly. Features:
- Improved "In-App" shopping allowing users to easily purchase 247 high-definition maps, including 167 recreation areas, 23 state parks, and 57 national parks that are also downloadable onto the iPhone
- Access to purchase 77 detailed state maps that are easily downloadable onto the iPhone
- Google Maps access for urban on-road data
- Simple toggle button to switch between Google content and AccuTerra off-road maps

CitySourced - I'm a huge fan of crowd-sourcing so this app is a huge hit. CitySourced enables the user to grab information and share a report with their local government agency. Snap a photo, geolocate it, add a description (like a pothole needing repair) and submit! This is an awesome service built using the ArcGIS API for iOS and a perfect complement to any local government looking to get up and running quickly with a useful mobile solution to connect with the local population. http://www.citysourced.com

TerraPad - This via Quebec-based Fasterre. Terrapad is a small-scale GIS product, available for free on the AppStore. Download it. Using Terrapad, you may browse the 'extension store' and download such customized extensions that are relevant to your field of work.
