Digital Map Products Helps California City Provide Quick, Affordable GIS to Departments, Public  E-mail

02 September 2010

Irvine, CA - September 1, 2010 - Digital Map Products (DMP), a leading provider of cloud-based spatial technology solutions, today announced Union City, California is now using its CityGIST technology to collect and share GIS data among departments and with the public.

CityGIST is Digital Map Products' Software-as-a-Service enterprise GIS application created specifically for cities and other local government organizations.

Like many local governments, Union City faced increased pressure to provide GIS-related services to internal departments and city residents, yet budget constraints prohibited the city from instituting a traditional Enterprise GIS system. That led the City Manager to establish a work group made up of economic development, fire, police, public works and other departments to find a new, more cost-effective solution. After several years of study, the work group selected CityGIST as its citywide system to facilitate date sharing across departments, publish data to the city website and allow easy access to GIS functionality for all city staff.

"We found CityGIST is more cost-effective and usable for us than a traditional build-it-yourself GIS system," Geoffrey E. Fisher, Manager of Information Systems for the City of Union City said. "It gives all departments a 'mile-high view' of the city and its activities, and we were able to put it into place and start using it almost immediately." A few of the ways the City plans to use its new system is to track graffiti, city assets such as street lights, and properties at high risk for foreclosure.

"Small and medium-sized cities are some of our most important customers and we know many of them are challenged with how to provide GIS services and share spatial data with the public without having to hire additional technical staff and break the bank," Digital Map Products CEO Jim Skurzynski said. "That's exactly why we offer CityGIST, to allow every department, even those with no GIS experience, to immediately access and analyze data and create and share new information. GIS is evolving rapidly to become more accessible for cities of all sizes and we're proud to be a driving force behind the mainstreaming of this valuable technology."

CityGIST is the new breed of enterprise GIS and allows cities to spatially enable their entire organization so staff can access and share data across departments, analyze GIS data, and deliver better constituent services. Because CityGIST is a Software-as-a-Service application, it is deployed rapidly, easy to use, more affordable, and enhances cities' efficiency without added burden to IT staff. CommunityViewT, a module of CityGIST lets cities bring interactive mapping to their public websites and publish spatial data to city residents.
