FAIRFAX, Va. & MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.-- June 15, 2004 - Wearable Computers and Acoustical Triangulation Technology Create Solution for Military and Law-enforcement Applications
Xybernaut(R) Corporation (NASDAQ:XYBR) and ShotSpotter, Inc. today announced a wearable computer system that allows military and law enforcement personnel to detect gunshots and their location in the field within seconds of the weapon discharging. ShotSpotter Gunshot Location Systems are currently deployed across the country at various law-enforcement agencies. This collaboration allows the system to go into the field as a mobile, wearable unit. Also announced today was a co-marketing agreement between the two companies.
The Xybernaut technologies are serving as first-responder and front-line computing devices during critical incidents in both ShotSpotter's law enforcement and military systems. Xybernaut technologies will also host the complex computing tasks required to perform gunshot triangulation in ShotSpotter's military systems. The combined system enhances rapid-response capabilities by providing immediate access to critical operational information necessary to initiate tactical intervention, rescue and/or recovery operations within moments after gunfire has been detected in a monitored area.
"We are fortunate to have a wearable computer system as flexible and rugged as the Xybernaut products to integrate with our gunshot location system; this makes our solution truly mobile," said Major General (Ret.) Steve Siegfried, former director of homeland security for the state of South Carolina and vice chairman of ShotSpotter. "Not only is it a huge advantage for law-enforcement officers to continue to receive data in the field once they respond to a gunshot alert, but now we can bring this valuable ability to our troops in the military, as well."
Xybernaut Atigo(R) and Mobile Assistant(R) V (MA(R) V) mobile/wearable computers have been chosen as the equipment for this collaborative system. ShotSpotter has already integrated the Xybernaut wearable computing technologies and solutions with its Gunshot Location System and field deployments have already begun.
"We are confident that the mobile nature of the combined gunshot location solution will add considerable flexibility to such an important application," stated Steven A. Newman, Xybernaut president and COO. "Serving as the mobile platform for the ShotSpotter gunshot location system is yet another way for our mobile/wearable computers to be instrumental in homeland security, war-fighting and law enforcement applications."
The Atigo is a smart Web pad computer, providing immediate access to critical information available via wireless communications and/or the Internet. The MA(R) V is a state-of-the-art PC-equivalent mobile computer, providing immediate access to information in the computer's internal storage, or information available via WiFi, local area networks and/or the Internet. Atigo and MA V devices can be easily integrated into tactical uniforms (such as body armor or protective garments for HAZMAT situations). With the mobile/wearable computers, critical information is available on an as-needed, where-needed basis, making it ideally suited to emergency response situations.
The mobile Gunshot Location System allows first responders and subsequent emergency personnel to manage operations by having various types of critical information at their fingertips, including time and location data for detected gunshots, aerial city block grids overlaid with shot location coordinates, analysis of weapon type, building floor plans/schematics for nearby facilities, available images related to a response location or site, incident command protocols and other critical response data.
For military applications, ShotSpotter relies on Xybernaut devices both as an output device to squad and platoon leaders as well as the underlying computational hardware to perform the triangulation and other complicated mathematics inherent in such systems. The Atigo also acts as the base station for all communication with various mobile and semi-permanent sensors in this completely mobile system.
Xybernaut and ShotSpotter have agreed to market their products jointly, and earlier this month co-presented the solution at the International Conference on Wearable Computing in Washington, D.C. The companies' sales forces will also offer each other's products and manage the delivery of integrated solutions to their respective customers.
