It seems the always popular and sometimes heated discussion of GISP certification has snuck up on Twitter again... I stirred the pot a couple of weeks back and its been going strong since!
The topic has even resulted in this blog posting from Roger... read on for an interesting perspective (See Twitter user @storm72) as Roger shares some of his thoughts on certification. Additionally, Don Meltz (@donmeltz) has also shared his thoughts in this blog post.
Seems there's a couple of common trends [that I've observed] with the GISP:
Since the grandfathering-in provision has lapsed, apps by seasoned professionals has declined (no exact #'s sorry although a GISP rep did mention this on Twitter))
Veterans seems to either have no time for the lengthy process, or it seems many believe there's little benefit to them.
Professionals that have been grand-fathered in seem to be slow in renewing their GISP status.
Government GISers seem to have embraced the GISP process
a user comment is how does GISP address the Land Surveyor and why is a skilled/experienced land surveyor qualified as a GISP?
and something of interest, what if government agencies start mandating that GISP be a requirement of responding to RFPs?
The lines are strongly divided!
And so, see below a Twitter timeline showing GISP Tweets... see also the GISP search stream here. What's your thought on this? Peter Batty is another long-time GIS professional who has shared thoughts on this topic. See this article "The GIS Certification emperor has no clothes" that Peter authored a few years back (well done Peter, you get 10 points for that article I think ;0)
Please note, I am not a GISP, although I considered doing the paperwork to be grand-fathered in, however, gave up after not having the time to complete the application process. It is my opinion that there's a heavy percentage of GISPs from the Government camp... obviously this sector seems to find value in the certification process - I have my own thoughts on why there's so many government GISPs, however, I'll keep those to myself at this time for fear of really getting things heated up!
A GISP is a certified geographic information systems (GIS) Professional who has met the minimum standards for ethical conduct and professional practice as established by the GIS Certification Institute (GISCI)
