(Jan. 7, 2010/Harrisburg, Pa.) The U.S. Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) received a 2009 Defense Logistics Award for its implementation of satellite technology to track unit move cargo using GeoDecisions' patented IRRIS technology.
The Web-based application enables USTRANSCOM to improve Outside the Continental United States (OCONUS) total asset visibility for shipments in the Pakistan Ground Lines of Communication (PAKGLOC) and the OCONUS transport of Arms, Ammunitions, and Explosives (AA&E). GeoDecisions is an information technology company specializing in geospatial solutions.
The Strategy, Policy, Programs, and Logistics Directorate, Asset Visibility Division of USTRANSCOM accepted the award in the Technology Implementation of the Year category.
For USTRANSCOM, IRRIS provides near-real-time visibility of shipments traveling through the Northern Distribution Network, enhancing the daily management of shipments. The functionality also gives users the ability to receive automated alerts when a shipment deviates from a specific route as a result of incidents, weather issues, and/or emergencies. USTRANSCOM's use of this tracking technology results in a more efficient and effective supply chain and improved warfighter safety.
The Defense Logistics Awards have been established to honor, recognize, and promote the logisticians in the U.S. Department of Defense and the defense industry who have made a significant contribution to military logistics. These logisticians support interoperability and transformation through logistics initiatives, programs, and processes.
IRRIS was originally developed for the U.S. Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, a component command of USTRANSCOM, to track, manage, and document the movement of surface cargo transported throughout the world. Today, the portal serves a number of federal and state agencies. For more information, visit www.irris.com.
