GISLERS Summer School 2009 in Salzburg, Austria
The Centre for Geoinformatics (Z_GIS) hosted a Summer School on "Bridging GIS, Landscape Ecology and Remote Sensing for Landscape Planning (GISLERS)" from July 3 - 14, 2009. The event was co-financed by the Socrates / Erasmus Intensive Programme (IP) under the umbrella of the Lifelong Learning Programme (Grant Agreement Number: LLP/AT - 230/31/08) and co-organized with the University of Kiel (Germany), University of Nottingham (United Kingdom), West University of Timisoara (Romania), University of the Aegean (Greece) and the University of Turku (Finland). Forty-three participants from 18 disciplines and fourteen countries studied methods and techniques to assess the interplay and mutual benefits of GIS, Landscape Ecology and Remote Sensing. Participants also gained a special insight into nature protection issues and landscape ecological impacts when visiting the National Park of Hohe Tauern and the Hydrodropower plant and reservoir at Moserboden, Kaprun.
In a set of lectures, group work and lab sessions participants focused on using Geographic Information Systems and Spatial Analysis techniques dealing with digital terrain modelling, object-based image analysis and risk assessments (e.g. flooding). Participants had the possibility to benefit from the AGIT, GI-Forum and IALE EU Conference 2009 which brought young scientists in contact with the established GI and Landscape Ecology community. In a panel discussion jointly developed with a Summer School organised by Bratislava University students discussed current problems in landscape ecology and analysed how GIS and Remote Sensing can be used in the field.
