10 Reasons Why You Need GISuser in a Down Economy! PDF Print E-mail
Written by Glenn Letham (@gletham)
21 January 2009
Every so often I decide that instead of promoting and touting what others are doing, that maybe its time to blow our own horn! Now keep in mind, this posting isn't totally self-serving, rather, I'm trying to offer up some insight to the GIS user community and share with you some of the great resources we offer that can help you or your company during tough times.

Please note, while I am a very active blogger and social networking junkie, I typically elect not to "break news" about GIS and Geo companies that are down-sizing and laying off. Indeed it is somewhat relevant to all of us, however, I feel that we are bombarded enough these days with the doom and gloom news reports on the economy via CNN, the evening news, the newspapers, online news yadaya... rather, I elect to concentrate on sharing upbeat stories, news, helpful tips, and success stories that are coming from the GIS industry at large - so please, save your tips about layoffs at your company and focus on how the future looks bright for GIS and Geospatial Tech.

And so, I offer up my list of 10 great reasons why GISuser.com (and our sister resources at LBSzone.com, Amerisurv.com, and SymbianOne.com) are a valuable resource for you in these challenging economic times.

1. We're upbeat! As mentioned in the opening, we try to focus on the positive and offer up stories and news of encouragement and innovation in GIS and geospatial technologies. After all, President Bush didn't simply pull GIS out of a hat when he offered up $4.9 million in grants several years ago to train workers for careers in the geospatial industry as part of the Bush administration's High Growth Job Training Initiative. Recall, The High Growth Job Training Initiative identified 14 high growth sectors including Geospatial Technologies - projected to add substantial numbers of new jobs to the economy see www.doleta.gov/Brg/JobTrainInitiative/

2. Stay informed - we're in touch with the industry and as a result, we hear from all corners of the Globe every day about interesting news and developments affecting GIS and geospatial technologies. The site is updated daily with the latest news and PR from all the names in GIS. Your company can maintain a competitive advantage simply by staying in the know - updates are also served via RSS feed, social bookmarks, and 2x a week in our e-newsletter. We also attend numerous events (in the past 10 years I've been to more than 100 around the Globe) and relay feedback live from many venues and report back via event wrap-up articles... there's always loads of goodies in these. I've heard people tell me, sorry but I don't want the newsletter anymore because I get too much email... sorry, but that's a load of crap! I challenge you to show me a fuller email box than mine. Missing out on a notice of a new product or application that can help in your job or perhaps missing out on word of an RFP that is idea for you or your company is priceless! Register for our newsletters at http://www.gisuser.com/subscribe.html

3. Free exposure and listings - We offer a number of ways for individuals and companies to get exposure for their apps, product or services. We maintain an industry directory (directory.gisuser.com) where anyone in Geo can get listed (free and enhanced options) and get a link to your website from ours. Many companies have already received hundreds of links into their webpage courtesy of a free listing. It's free so what are you waiting for?? You or your company can also provide us with an article to publish (sorry but we don't pay people for contributions) or simply send us details of a tip on a cool GIS or Geo solution. We publish original GIS articles, tips, spotlights, reviews every day on GISuser.com, on the blog and even cross-promote on our other publications if applicable. If your news hits out site it will also get snagged by Google news crawl immediately and we also get indexed by a number of other news crawlers as well. Really cool stuff gets mentioned at times on our blog, twitter, facebook page, linkedin etc...

4. Free advice - Yes indeed, I get loads of emails and calls from people wanting tips, pointers to applications, geo solutions, and even jobs. Indeed, occasionally I may mis-place an email or two but overall, typically respond to everyone who's asking for something. Just this week I've had questions from a mobile tech event planner, Geo headhunter, a few job seekers, and a company with a major software release.

5. Jobs... We maintain a popular and relatively active GIS Job board and we've priced it so that we offer the cheapest and most likely, the best deal in GIS job posting around. A little known fact is that we are always game to accommodate requests so if your company has no method of paying online we can invoice you, or if you have no budget at all (perhaps a small, local government)  we'll even post your job advert for free - all you need to do is ask! A little known secret is that we also offer companies an option to secure a one-year, unlimited GIS job posting account for a flat fee of $400 - imagine, you can post 400 jobs this year for just $1 a piece! Students and professionals alike are encouraged to check our job board periodically for positions that may be suited for you.

6. Headhunting - No, we aren't pro headhunters but we do occasionally hear from some of them! A number of headhunters use the GISuser LinkedIn group to sniff for talent (the group is already 2,000+ strong) and just recently, a headhunter contacted us directly to ask if there were any candidates available/suitable for a high level sales position. We sent a couple of referrals and a contact of ours is likely going to be set up for an interview.

7. Social Bookmarking - Chance are that you are now interested in various social media bookmarks. Twitter, LinkedIn, facebook, YouTube, Flickr, Jaiku and many others are very popular. GISuser and the Editor (me) are early adopters of many of these services and have a relatively large network of social media contacts. You'll be privy to loads of interesting tips, updates, and even some funs tuff if you get connected to us... of note, be sure visit our blog (blog.gisuser.com) for daily news updates that may not be hitting the GISuser home page! The blog puts a different spin on things and news comes via the Editor's words rather than from corporate marketing speak - it gets tons of traffic too!

8. We are not only about GIS - Indeed, GISuser.com is focused on GIS and Geospatial, but we'll also keep you in the know about hot, related technologies that can be complementary to your GIS apps and services. Mobile, social media, web2.0, location-services etc... are very hot and may offer some opportunities for you or your company.

9. Share your News - Yes indeed, we publish loads of news but it never ceases to amaze me how many companies are out there yet their news is simply not being shared with the major GIS news outlets (like us). I see news releases published on corporate websites, blogs, and even hitting news wires (free and paid) yet these news tips are not finding their way to GISuser (or even to competing publications). If you have marketing or PR staff, or perhaps have a PR agency working for you, you absolutely have to be sending your news to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it . We will consider publishing all relevant and interesting GIS related news/press and we also offer a "premium" (yes, that means paid) option that can land you tons of exposure! Another under-used service is our premium press distribution where you or your company can have your news, along with  a logo featured front and center on GISuser.com in our "Top news" section. News featured here also gets added exposure in the newsletter and is submitted to a number of social news sharing services (like Google news, DIGG, delicious) and may even get mentioned by us via some social bookmarks like Twitter, LinkedIn, and facebook) Think about it next time you have BIG news!

Here's what one company said just this week after having their latest news hit GISuser.com and LBSzone.com - "Also, your $400 dollar listing fee has worked out for us pretty well so far... we got 450+ unique visits last night after 6pm"

 10. Get Exposure - ok, here's the sales pitch but can you blame me? We offer a variety of promotional opportunities for your company including banner advertising, editorial contribution, newsletter placement, even email list rental. We price amazingly low (given that we're an industry leading information portal with a vast reach) and we can tailor a package for companies of any size or with any budget and we can also be creative and do cool things like host a poll or survey, promote a video, share an image gallery or even publish a product spotlight review - want more info? Contacts info @gisuser.com

Good luck and remember to contact us to let us know that we've helped you in some way! We always are eager to hear about what's working and what's not.
