Today, More than 80 countries will participate in holding local events such as corporate open houses, hands-on workshops, community expos, school assemblies, and more. Don’t forget to celebrate GIS Day… what ever you decide to do, try to help educate someone else about GIS and/or geo technologies. Even if you can’t take in an event or take part in one (search for one here) you can still visit GISday.com and see details of many of the events going on around the Globe. If you have a little budding geographer (if not maybe you know a couple of kids) you could share some of the following fine (and cool) K-12 GIS educational resources with them...
Here’s a fun task, Download, Print and hang a beautiful Landsat Imagery poster of your State - See USGS Earth as Art resource - then be sure to learn a bit about the Landsat history and future of Landsat! For example, I have this fine work of art, courtesy of http://eros.usgs.gov/imagegallery/index.php/collection/earth_as_art_2 - the kids love it!
GIS Day is principally sponsored by the National Geographic Society, the Association of American Geographers, University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, the United States Geological Survey, The Library of Congress, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and ESRI.
GIS Day is part of the National Geographic Society's Geography Action, a year-long initiative encompassing key educational achievements such as GIS Day and Geography Awareness Week. Each year has a different geographic focus to explore and understand. The 2006-2007 program theme kicks off a five-year, around-the-world curriculum series with Africa in 3-D. GIS users and vendors are invited to join the GIS Day sponsors in opening their doors for GIS Day.
The National Geographic Society has sponsored Geography Awareness Week since 1987 to promote geographic literacy in schools, communities, and organizations, with a focus on the education of children. GIS Day is held on the Wednesday during Geography Awareness Week. (Source: GISday.com)
